Got a question about product creation - behaviour and limitations

Hi there,

I’ve got a technical question about the way that Shopify handles product creation in bulk .. either via csv import or via the Shopify API

I’m particularly interested to find out the process of product creation in bulk and particularly how this relates to the ‘created time’ value.

So products will often be created in batches, but I’m needing to find out what happens to the created time value for a store when ‘blocks’ of products are created

So say given a scenario that a merchant embarks on an import process for a large number of products. Say for illustration this is 100K SKUs

  • What would the ‘created date’ values look like once this import had completed?

  • Would any products share an identical created at date value?

  • Or would they enter some sort of sequential queue - so say they were all processed on the same day, they would all have different minute and second values in that UTC timestamp?

  • Would Shopify import process - deal with this in batches. So for example so you would see blocks of identical values? If so how big would these blocks be?

  • What are the Shopify limits as regards product creation vs time. i.e. maybe if you try to create more that 100K products in a 24 hr period you have to wait for the next day to create more??

  • Or maybe product creation queue is limted to pure speed? i.e. product creation rate is throttled to a # per hour?

Thanks in advance - any wisdom that can be shared on the above would be greatly appreciated

Best regards

Martin
