HELP! Shopify POS is automatically removing sales tax from all of my taxable items.

I found that if I put all my food items (these were eventually identified as the only items where the POS is incorrectly removing tax) to a the top tier (most broad) category of “food, beverages & tobacco” the tax works correctly on my POS. I’m in Pennsylvania and my accountant told me to change the category to “anything that functioned correctly” as the state charges the same tax on all non-essential food items (also the same as sales tax at 6%) and doesn’t care what “category” I’m using. I can use “type”’to more specifically identify the item (honey, chocolate, etc) with no ill effect on taxes. BTW, it was my accountant that figured it out not Shopify tech support which just left me hanging  Hope that works for you!!

Hi. I am struggling with Shopify not taking out the taxes as I am an origin based company in Pennsylvania. They simply will not help and keep sending me in a circle. I can’t believe what bull they keep saying. Did you get your issue resolved.

They didn’t. They just dropped the communication altogether. The workaround
I found (using the broader “Food, Beverages and Tobacco” product category)
is the only thing I’ve found that works and it was not their suggestion.
I’m sorry you’re having a similar experience.

I’m having the same issue. Was working on my taxes and noticed that many fourth quarter sales did not collect tax on certain items. Not I’m screwed trying to figure out the sales tax myself so the gov doesn’t hunt me down. Why did they screw this up and not tell us?

This did not fix anything at all on my end.

I sell t-shirts and prints, and changed everything to “Posters, Prints, and Visual Artwork” for the taxes to start working properly.

This happened to me. My store was collecting sales tax without any issues all of 2022 and Q1 and Q2 of 2023. Then it just stopped. August of 23 is when it stopped and I havent been able to collect sales tax since. Of course I didnt notice it until Decemeber when i went to pay my Q4. I added back my Tax Id info and my shopify chat person said ti should be fine and i must have deleted it by accident. Yea right. I built my store, how would i have deleted it on accident. Now its the end of Jan and i still havent been able to collect. Ive now done over $50,000 of sales without collecting. Shopify has been almost zero help and cant figure out the problem.

doing some more research, it looks like when they launched, “shopify tax” it requires the “this is a physical product” box to be check to add tax to all orders. But no one tells you this. They just let you get screwed.

funny, tho, i have gone through my whole store and made the change and it still doesnt collect tax.

im in the same boat as you now. there needs to be a class action on this.

If you select, “requires shipping” how is that going to affect customers shopping in the store. i have shipping and delivery.

Were you able to resolve this? The same thing happened to me. My tax info disappeared. Shop said I must have deleted it.

The “Requires Shipping” is no longer an option here. “Physical product” is the only thing I see that comes close. I have all physical product boxes checked, charge tax on all items, and my tax Id number for my state is entered. Still not collecting taxes though.
