How can I change my online store's URL from alphanumeric to custom?

So I decided to setup a store and migrate from Etsy over time. When you open a store at Etsy they give you a URL etsy.com/shop/Storename. When I setup my Shopify account its a bizarre alphanumeric url dot myshopify

So for a url link or sharing with someone the shops site giving a alpha numeric is not the best and looks more like some scam site. I asked to change this and support was brutally slow in support. every question I could have gone and watched something between responses in live chat. So the upshot was I’d have to get a domain or repoint a domain to change the url.

Bizarre..

Yes, you’ll need to buy a domain name and then use it for your store. What do you need at this moment?

Hi @greatwhite70 ,

Thank you for reaching out here about this.

When you sign up for Shopify, you have the opportunity to either create your default domain name, that is your-store.myshopify.com, or you had one generated for you. If you later decide that you want a different .myshopify.com domain name to display to your customers, then you can change it, but only one time. To do to so you can follow these steps:

  • From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains.
  • On the Domains page, click Change to a new myshopify.com domain next to your default domain name.
  • Enter a new name, and then click Add domain.

Alternatively, if you want to change the web address that’s displayed to customers browsing your online store to emphasize your brand, then you can buy and add a custom domain. When you use a custom domain name, your *.myshopify.*com domain name isn’t displayed.

Make sure that you record and keep your original .myshopify.com domain name somewhere safe, regardless of whether you created it or whether it was autogenerated. After you change your .myshopify.com domain name, you still need to use your original .myshopify.com domain name to log in to your store and to identify your account when you contact Shopify Support.

After your business information is set up, it’s time to start building your store. I’d also suggest looking at our fantastic courses over on Shopify Learn for a more in-depth look at how to take your business from set up to the first sale!
