How can I correct incorrect shipping rates on my new ecommerce site?

Topic summary

Main issue: A new Shopify store using USPS Ground Advantage with ShipStation/Stamps.com shows incorrect live shipping rates, likely due to misconfigured product weights/dimensions or packing logic.

Key guidance provided:

  • Review Shopify’s documentation on packages, shipment weights, and setting up packages to ensure accurate product and box data.
  • Consider an app (e.g., PH Multi Carrier Shipping Label) to integrate Stamps.com and provide live rates at checkout.

Support positions and updates:

  • Since third‑party apps are involved, settings affecting rates may reside in those apps; initial advice was to contact ShipStation.
  • After contacting ShipStation, the merchant learned it can’t be fixed there and wants to cap boxes at a maximum of 10 items.

Platform limitations and alternatives:

  • Shopify cannot assign shipping rates based on item quantity per box. Weight-based rates are supported and can be configured as an alternative.
  • For deeper, store-specific troubleshooting (including verifying product/package data and rate rules), the merchant should contact Shopify’s Authenticated Support.

Status: Unresolved. Action items include correcting product/package weights, implementing weight-based rate tiers, and exploring third‑party apps for advanced packing rules.

I am new to Shopify. I opted to use USPS Ground Advantage for all of my shipments. I am using ShipStation and also Stamps.com for USPS. I have LIVE RATES checked off. I think that I may have programmed the weights or dimensions of my products incorrectly because the shipping charges don’t make sense. I also may have programmed somewhere to configure ship rates based on dimensions or number of items as opposed to total weight. But I don’t know where to find it and fix it! Is it on Shopify or ShipStation or Stamps.com? If so, where exactly do i view everything and fix it? Need help immediately. The site launches tomorrow AM!!

Alternatively, you can utilize the PH Multi Carrier Shipping Label app to integrate your Stamps.com account, offering live rates at checkout.

Hi there, @CuttingEdgeProm ! Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the Shopify Community with your questions around your shipping weights. My name is Imogen. It’s good to meet you!

In situations like these where you’re using third party applications to assist with your shipping set up, it’s likely that the settings you’re looking for will be contained within these apps. As Shopify Support Staff are not trained on third party apps, we won’t be able to assist you directly on where you need to go within these apps to make the required changes. I recommend that you reach out to ShipStation’s Support Team directly with assist regarding your shipping rates, as they’ll be able to let you know if the cause of your issues are being caused by settings within their app or not. From there, you’ll be able to determine if you need to adjust something within Shopify directly.

thank you! I just reached out to ShipStation. This can’t be fixed on their end. I need to find a way to program that the max number of pieces per box is 10 pcs. Let me know if you have ideas. I would think that many many people who use Shopify have this issue.

You wouldn’t be able to assign shipping rates based on ‘quantity’ in a box, but you can do shipping rates based on weight! We have a help document here that outlines how to make shipping rates based on the weight of the order that you can use to create shipping rates.

As we’re unable to authenticate users in the Shopify Community, we’re not able to dig into your store and get a full picture of how your shipping set up looks. Considering that you were using a third party app, we’ll want to make sure we have a solid idea of your setup. As such, it would be best for you to reach out to our Authenticated Support Team via our AI Assistant so we can get you authenticated, and dive into your account so we can get a good idea of the entirety of your set-up, and advise on what changes should be made.
