How can I modify the billing address on an order?

Hi there, how do you change the billing address on a order? I can’t see an edit button available for billing address, only for shipping address. I know you can directly go into the customers profile to edit this however it doesn’t amend the address from their order.

The edit order button doesn’t have the option for me to change billing details, only the product.

Hi @debbie23 ,

Unfortunately, the Billing Address cannot be changed from the Order page in Shopify admin because it must match the Billing Address on file with the customer’s bank or financial institution in order for the payment details to be verified and the sale to be completed.

In order to edit the Billing Address, you need the help of an app. Check out these apps which have the option to edit a billing address:

I hope this can help you achieve your goal.

This is a silly limitation. You can change the products in the order but cannot fix the mistake in the address your customer made in the registration form. What is Shopify’s recommended solution for such incidents without 3rd party app? Refund and create a new order? :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m encountering a similar issue with a customer who mistakenly used the gift recipient’s address as the billing address when placing an order. She is now requesting us to update the billing address. While I initially agreed to proceed immediately, given her status as an existing customer on a marketplace, I’ve since discovered that this isn’t feasible and find the situation quite uncomfortable.

It’s already challenging when a client transitions from a marketplace where they’re accustomed to making purchases to our own website. However, encountering such an issue on their first purchase, even if it’s their responsibility to provide the correct addresses, doesn’t reflect well.

Moreover, the explanation we have to provide might seem inadequate: if they undergo transaction verification with an incorrect billing address, which we cannot modify for security reasons, it may raise doubts about the security of our payment platform.

Furthermore, having to ask our client to make a new purchase to cancel the initial one doesn’t seem like an ideal solution to offer.

Since I haven’t found any mention of it, if it’s not possible to edit the billing address from the back office, is there a way for the client to do so from their account administration or settings?

This is still an issue right? Or has there been any updates, I’m experiencing this issue right now in 2024

Debbie, very relevant!

We repeatedly meet customers that aren’t able or willing to fill in the right address, for instance forget to give their housenumber, mistakenly give a wrong postal code, typing errors etcetera. Should be able to change the billing address as admin. As billing address is also needed for sending the invoice and warranty it’s more than annoying one cannot intervene. Customer self can ?

The latter is no longer available in the Shopify shop, as for the one by Cleveric, what an overkill plus 29 euro a month for a feature that should have been default, correct me if I’m wrong. Unfortunately is not enough for an answer, please add an option, so the admin can correct when the customer is wrong.

Have to add a new element. You get suggestions to change the address as Shopify notices there appears to be a problem with the address. By following the suggestion given, the delivery-address alters promptly but the invoice-address stays ‘as-it-is’ : wrong. We urgently need the chance to change the invoice-address also, before releasing the order, simply by making it possible to activate ‘approved’ to any order, whether because of payment-interruption, wrong address or other mistakes made? Is that a good idea?

I wholeheartedly agree with Alex_9999. I am the admin for another customer’s shopping cart on another platform that I have been managing for the past 15 years. The other platform offers the ability to edit and correct the billing address and reprocess the credit card authorization from the platform and updates the order information in the system. The system doesn’t double-charge the customer. This feature has been available on their platform for the past 8 years. We do not have the staff to chase down every transaction that gets flagged and I am seriously considering moving to the other platform. With all due respect, I wanted to use the other platform when building their site, but the customer insisted on using Shopify.

The only way to change your billing address is to delete your card on the Shopify website and re-register it adding your new details. This will allow you to enter your new address. Scary, I know. But I tried it myself and it worked perfectly.

Any updates on this? Haha, that is a joke. Of course not. Shopify makes excuses for not offering very basic functionality so they can make money from 3rd party app purchases from their marketplace. A huge percentage of these community discussions focusing on adding basic functionality never lead to changes. I am leaving Shopify soon for this reason. It is truly a horrible platform. If you don’t see it yet, you will.

Now that we have been begging to be able - by default - to make changes to a customer’s data for so long, is it time to raise the alarm a little louder? Just had another customer with incorrect address, disturbing typo, and we have to report him that unfortunately we can’t do anything about it. Is a Shopify programmer reading this? Come on! Action !

Is there any progress in this matter? A shopper chose “Turkey” instead of “Spain” next to it in the drop down, so I’d like to correct this mistake and chose the right country.
Isn’t there any possibility, are you serious?

Ive changed one of my invoices to use the shipping address as the billing address with the htmlcode in notifications.

Hey @debbie23,
If the billing address is just for your internal reference, you could add the correct details in the Order Timeline as a note, or tag the order so your team knows the right info.

If you need it changed for payment or invoicing purposes, your best bet is to:

  1. Cancel and refund the original order

  2. Recreate it with the correct billing details (It’s a bit more work, but it ensures your payment records match.)

For post-purchase processes like tracking or returns, the billing address usually isn’t used, only the shipping address is relevant. If that’s your main concern, tools like ParcelPanel Order Tracking or ParcelPanel Returns & Exchanges will work fine regardless of the billing info, since they pull shipping details directly from Shopify.

Hope this helps!
