A merchant seeks to reorder payment methods at checkout without paid apps, specifically wanting to prioritize Vipps (a popular Norwegian payment option) at the top of the list.
Initial Response:
Shopify support confirms native reordering is not possible; checkout code is locked and no built-in features exist for this
Despite documentation mentioning the ability to “reorder” payment methods, this functionality isn’t actually available
Feedback was submitted to Shopify developers for future consideration
Workarounds Discussed:
Scripts previously allowed reordering but are being deprecated
Using scripts blocks installation of newer features like the Bundles app
Several third-party apps mentioned: PayMix (initially free, now paid), Payments Genius (used by original poster), and Vista Payment Customization Rules
Current Status:
Multiple merchants express the same need, particularly for prioritizing lower-fee payment options
As of 2025, a native solution is now documented in Shopify’s checkout customization settings for payment methods
The discussion evolved from “not possible” to having both app-based and native solutions available

I’m looking to reorder the payment methods available in my store’s checkout process. I’ve seen solutions that involve using paid apps, but I’m wondering if there’s a way to accomplish this without additional costs.
I’ve gone through the payment customization tutorial provided by Shopify, but it seems to focus more on hiding a payment option rather than reordering them. While I found this tutorial helpful, it doesn’t fully address my specific need.
Does anyone have suggestions or resources on how to reorder payment methods using Shopify’s built-in features or through coding? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hey there, @KnutA . Thanks for reaching out to folks here in the Shopify Community with your question around re-arranging payment methods in the checkout. It’s good to meet you.
Unfortunately, re-arranging your payment methods in your checkout is not possible at this time. The coding for the checkout is pretty locked up tight, meaning that coding wouldn’t be able to be used to re-arrange them. There are also no features currently available to allow for re-arranging them natively within Shopify.
With that being said, we’ve received quite a number of requests for such a feature to exist and be made available. If you like, I’m happy to pass along this thread and any feedback you have around why you’d like to have this feature. If you’d like to provide some feedback, feel free to follow up here and I’ll pass it along!
Thank you for your response and for offering to pass along this feedback. I appreciate your help!
I believe this feature would be beneficial to many merchants. For example, in Norway, we have a popular local payment solution called Vipps. It’s common practice to place this option at the top of the payment methods list due to its popularity.
As for how this could be implemented, I’m not entirely sure as I’m relatively new to Shopify development. I initially thought it would be possible to build as a function, as the Shopify’s payment customization documentation states that we can “hide, reorder, and rename the payment options that are available to buyers during checkout.”
But any feature or method that would make it possible to reorder payment methods, without requiring complex coding, would be extremely helpful.
I appreciate you providing all of the context you have there. I’ve gone ahead and filled out our feedback form for me to submit internally, so you can trust that your feedback, and this thread, will get in front of our Developers.
If you’re looking for some more input from other third party Shopify developers, you can try asking this question on one of the developer boards. There’s always a good number of Shopify Partners and developers over there chatting about things. They may be able to point you in a potential direction regarding some additional options with coding.
think about different payment fees depending on PSP / payment option. I want to prioritize and aim to get the cheapest option used more by placing it on top of all other alternatives.
