How can I set a custom order ID in a more professional way?

Topic summary

A user wants to customize Shopify’s default order numbering system (which starts at #1001) to appear more professional. They propose using date-based formats like #20240423-01 to allow up to 99 orders per day.

Available Solution:

  • Shopify allows adding a prefix to order numbers through Settings > Store Details > Order ID format
  • Random or fully custom order IDs are not supported natively

Limitation:
The platform does not support dynamic date-based formatting or complete order ID customization beyond simple prefixes. The discussion remains open for alternative approaches or workarounds.

Hi there,

Noticing that orders start by #1001 and there is not much of user settings and preferences, I don’t really like that as I would prefer to be something more professional.

My idea is to choose from other possible or available options like by order date, for example today’s: #20240423-01. Maybe?

Last digits will give 99 possible orders per day, which I guess is more than enough.

Perhaps there could be other options or suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

Setting a random order ID wouldn’t be possible within Shopify. You can, however, add a prefix to your order number:

To add a prefix to your Shopify order numbers, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Store details.
  2. In the Order ID format section, enter your desired prefix in the Prefix field.
  3. Click Save.
