How can I smoothly transfer my Shopify content to a subdomain?

Hi dears,

I’m actually rewriting my business concept. And in the new concept, the shop is one part out of three.

As I do not want to confuse my customers, I want to have it separated.

Thus, I want to transfer the existing Shopify content to the subdomain “shop” and by that release my main domain for Wordpress.

What has to be done to achieve this goal in the most smooth way?

I found this: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/domains/managing-domains#set-your-primary-domain, but I’m not sure if this is the right way for my scenario (I understand this guy has two shops).

Thanks in advance!
Best,
Petra

Hallo nochmal!

LG, Petra

Moin Petra! @PetraQI

I will answer this in EN as this is the English community. So, you are essentially trying to achieve two branded domains - 1) the root domain “myshop.com” that directs to your Wordpress site, and 2) your subdomain “shop.myshop.com” that directs to your Shopify store. Did I get that right?

Apropos, the URL “myshop.myshopify.com” is just the internal URL that comes with every Shopify store. This domain cannot be changed and serves to index all the internal masterdata of the store. Without this domain the backend data would not work properly and it will usually direct to the “primary domainmyshop.com (either the root domain or the subdomain, whichever you prefer).

Generally, the subdomain will only re-route your customers to the platform in which the root domain is used, not to mention that this could also affect your store’s sales records and your SEO negatively if the domain is split between 2 platforms. So what can happen is that if you change the A record to 23.227.38.65 then the Wordpress store is disconnected. If you don’t change the A record to 23.227.38.65 then you may not be able to connect the subdomain so it’s a bit of “Catch-22”.

Another option would be to buy a separate domain and have two domains like

*meinBrand.com* and *meinShopBrand.com* or something similar.

If you would like to create a subdomain in your 3rd party domain account, you could try adding the Shopify CNAME which is responsible for the subdomain e.g. shop.shopifystore.com.

In the Type or Record Type field, enter CNAME and simply point the CNAME record for your subdomain to shops.myshopify.com. The root domain DNS settings are the A-Record. Also in the Host or Alias field, enter the subdomain that you want to connect to your Shopify store.

Hope that helps!

Hi @Gabe ,
thanks for your reply! Sorry, I got puzzled with the German/English community.

  1. Yes, you understand it correctly. The root domain = my domain at the provider.

  2. Yes. Here a screenshot to be clear

  1. Yes, clear, that this can’t be changed: URL “myshop.myshopify.com” .

  2. Sub-domain/rerouting: I don’t get this 100%
“…subdomain will only re-route your customers to the platform in which the root domain is used”
Sounds complicate. Based on the screenshot above, I only want to route myshop.myshopify.com to shop.mydomain.com

Perhaps to mention, that mydomain.com was not bought at Shopify, I had this before and used it for the Shop. This is also why for me the wording “mydoman.com” instead of “myshop” is -for my understanding- more clear. Makes sense?

  1. The SEO point is absolutely valid. I need to think about it. Don’t want to get Mrs. Google confused. Regarding sales… I was ill and did not make marketing, so no drama from that perspective.

  2. I’ll not buy another domain at Shopify. I have free domains at my provider included in the pro package.

  3. A records/DNS: What’s the dependency of the “may” … you wrote “…you may not be able…” ?

Thanks a lot for your kind advices, Gabe!!

Have a nice evening!
Best, Petra

So the Shopify Store should only have the subdomain shop.mydomain.com pointing to it in your DNS settings and the Wordpress site the root domain mydomain.com and that won’t really be possible I’m afraid unless you can implement it this way.

But once you remove to root domain from Shopify (to point it at the Wordpress site), you will inevitably remove the subdomain too. So you may need to think about two separate Domains - one for your Shopify store and one for your Wordpress store.

Thanks!
Just to be clear, I don’t want to make two shops. The Wordpress site will not be a shop.
Hmmm  .
Is there an option to create a “shop.mydomain.com” => “shop.mydomain.myshopify.com” and move all the existing data to the “subdomain” = a new Shopify shop (and cancel the current one) ?

@PetraQI

I wouldn’t think so Petra, tbh, but if you like, I can recommend an SEO and domains expert (like Jonat Brander from storeinspector.io).

They have some tricks up their sleeves when it comes to domains and can definitely advise you on what options there are. An inquiry email to them is usually answered pretty quickly!

Hope that helps!
