How can I successfully set up my email hosting with a third party provider?

I am trying to set up my email accounts with the hosting company for my other websites. They told me to direct the MX records to their servers. To do that, I have created MX0 and MX1 records in the DNS page of the Domains section.

However, this isn’t working (I can send but not receive emails); my email host tells me that the name servers are here:

Name Server: NS-CLOUD-C1.GOOGLEDOMAINS.COM

I have logged in to my Google account and I do not have any domains registered with them. I am guessing that Shopify uses Google Domains - is that correct? If that is correct, and I have set up the MX records correctly, does it take time to transfer to my provider?

If I wanted the hosting to be transferred to my provider but still with the web traffic pointing to Shopify, is that easy to do without interrupting the shop?

Thanks

Hi, @Luna2021 !

Ryder here, from the Social Care Team at Shopify. Welcome to the Community and thanks for posting! I believe I had come across a similar instance in helping a friend who was able to send outgoing emails, but unable to receive incoming emails, so I hope that I can be of assistance. You mentioned that you logged into your Google account - are you using Google Workspace to host your custom domain email address, or another platform?

You should be able to follow this guide to set up MX records for your Google Workspace email. If you’re with a different email hosting company, they may be able to offer a similar guide. Although it can take 24-48 hours to propagate globally, when I added the Google Workspace MX records yesterday, it took as little as 15 minutes for me to receive test emails.

As for your second question - what email host are you currently with, and which provider were you considering transferring to? Are you able to please clarify why you’re wanting to transfer your hosting from one to the other? I would imagine you would need to readjust your MX records to match the new host’s name servers, which could result in a temporary disruption; however, this question may be best directed to the email host in question, as they’re more likely to have specifics in regards to whether they may be any disruptions with receiving emails.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if there’s anything I can clarify on the Shopify end.

Hi

Thanks for your response. I only mentioned the Google account because the
nameservers are listed as with Google Domains. This email account is with
Google, but I want to use sales@lunaslabel.com. I have set up forwarding
as an interim measure, but I want to be able to send as well. I haven’t
set up a Google Workspace account.

My provider is LCN.com and, as I have a hosting plan with them. I had
created MX records:

mx0.lcn.com
mx1.lcn.com

in the DNS settings in Shopify (these have been deleted to allow the
forwarding to work). I could send emails from LCN but not receive them.
If I can just get the mail hosting working, that would be great and I won’t
bother with switching the hosting (I was nervous about doing that). I did
notice that I am unable to transfer my domain until 60 days after it was
set up, so I can’t do that until 4 May. Could that affect the MX records?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ryder (again)

I want to use LCN for my mail servers, not Google Workspace.

The instructions you gave (for Google Workspace) tell me to create the MX records with the Domain Host, which is what LCN told me to do. However, when I look at ICAAN lookup, it tells me that Google Domains are the host; I log onto Google Domains and it tells me that I don’t have any domains with them. My initial question was “Does Shopify use Google Domains?” Everything seems to point to that - for instance, I can set the MX records in the Shopify portal, the domain was bought through Shopify.

Until I know the definitive answer to that, I can’t proceed. Therefore:

  1. Does Shopify use Google Domains for name servers?
  2. If so, how can I set up the MX records with Shopify so that I can send AND receive emails?
  3. If Shopify doesn’t use Google Domains does anyone have an idea about how I can proceed?

Thanks
