I recently learned about browser apps like Capital One Shopping , that automatically sort through and apply discount codes to your cart. Does anyone know how we can work around this to prevent shoppers from using our current codes? Only customers that have signed up for our email list should have access to the code. Thanks!
I know that these browser extensions search the internet for active discount codes, though they don’t offer much more detail on how they work beyond that. However, they would only be able to access information that has been made available publicly. So, if your store’s discount codes are only within your admin and sent out in emails to a list of customers, they won’t be detectable. Please rest assured that the information within your admin is secure. These tools would only be able to find a discount code if you or a customer had shared it somewhere publicly online.
I guess it’s on us to switch up discount codes from time to time… But it really is a bummer that Capital One is making life harder for small business by aggregating all available codes. Big retailers sure. But come on guys.
I’m the eCommerce Partnerships Manager at cleanCART, and we have a Shopify app that blocks extensions like CapitalOne Shopping from automatically applying codes at checkout. Customers will still be able to manually use the discount codes that were actually intended for them, such as when they signup for emails.

If you’re also dealing with coupon extensions automatically applying codes at checkout on your site, I would love to chat and see if we might be able to help with cleanCART. Our Shopify app is able to block these extensions, so that you don’t have to worry about constantly switching up your coupon codes.

We developed an app that blocks 25+ coupon extensions like Honey, Capital One Shopping, Retailmenot, Coupert, and so many others.
It not only blocks them from auto injecting, but even blocks them from showing up in the first place.
But even more exciting, we also crawl 100+ coupon sites and let you know exactly what code leaked out to which site.
No one can fully block extensions from scraping. That’s just sadly a thing that isn’t possible, but at least you’ll know about it, and if you are on a plus plan, we can also disable it in checkout.
Best part! It’s affordable and as low as $29/mo. No need to pay hefty premiums for half the features!
