Hi!
I have purchased a premium theme, we have customized it and would like to use it across two stores - I understand that a second theme license is needed, but what is the best approach for licensing the second store if we are planning to use the same customized theme files as the first theme purchased. Would we be able to purchase the second theme, then look for the license in the code and copy that over to the second store’s theme code?
I got in touch with the theme developers and they told me to get in touch with a shopify rep as it is something they haven’t dealt with before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
All the best!
Hey there, @Tim_tribe . Thanks for reaching out to the Shopify Community with your theme licensing question! You have a great one here, so I’m happy to provide you with some helpful information regarding your themes and your stores.
So, you’re totally correct about needing a second theme license if you plan on transferring theme files from one store to another. As you seem to be aware of already, you’ll want to purchase the base version of the theme through our Theme Store through your second shop. This receipt of purchase that will be attached to the store is enough to satisfy the licensing requirements. So there is no need for you to copy or paste any sort of licensing information from your theme files directly. To be fair, I’m not too sure if such licensing info exists in the theme files anyway. If it did, it would be incredibly easy for someone to engage in piracy activities with said theme files.
After you have purchased the base theme on your second store, you’ll have satisfied the licensing for the theme at that point. From then on, you’re free to use that theme’s files, along with the customizations you’ve mentioned, in that second store. I was able to confirm this with my internal team, as I wanted to ensure the correct info was being passed along to you here.
With all of that being said, you should be good to go once you purchase that theme on the newer store! If you have any additional questions for me, please feel free to follow up with a reply and let me know! I’d be glad to help you out further if needed!
