How do I set up my GoDaddy email with a Shopify purchased domain?

Hello, I have purchased a domain with Shopify and purchased my email service with Godaddy.

I’m trying to set up my email service but Godaddy tells me that my domain belongs something I know absolutely nothing about.

Please assist.

Hello @Lish1 !

This is Lana from Shopify.

So while you can have custom email addresses with your Shopify domain, you may have seen that we do not provide email forwarding. In order for the email to work, you would need to set up email forwarding with a service such as GSuite or Zoho. I understand you purchased email services from GoDaddy, - did you speak with their support regarding this yet? If not, you will be able to do so through this link here.

It is possible that in order to use their hosting services you might need to transfer your domain there, so do make sure to clarify that with them.
If you choose to continue hosting with Shopify, then you might want to look into the ways of setting up email hosting that I mentioned earlier. We have a full guide on how to set this up with your Shopify domain here, and it includes this helpful video:

Let me know if you have any questions or doubts here, and I will be happy to help you out!

Thanks. -Lana

Hi Lana, I went with the link you gave me. It is not very user friendly.
I have been chatting with Godaddy today. They mentioned that Support at
Shopify would be able to assist me with this.

Who would be abe to help me please?

I already paid Godaddy and cannot spend more money..

Please respond soonest.
Thank you
Lish

Sorry to hear that the link wasn’t helpful, was there a particular section that you find you’re getting stuck on?

As for setting it up with GoDaddy’s email service, - did they provide any steps that need to be taken on Shopify’s end in order for this to work?
From what I was seeing on GoDaddy’s help centre, they have information on how to set up email forwarding here. I can see that it does need to be purchased (which you have done already) but it looks like the domain needs to be hosted by GoDaddy in order for you to be able to use their email forwarding services. When you contacted them, did you make sure to ask them if the domain needs to be hosted with them?

If it does need to be on GoDaddy, then we can take a look at the steps involved in transferring your Shopify domain to GoDaddy. Please do note, the following steps can only be taken if your Shopify domain was purchased over 60 days ago:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Domains.
  2. In the Shopify-managed domains section, click the name of the domain that you want to transfer.
  3. Click Transfer domain > Transfer to another provider.
  4. Review the information and click Confirm.
  5. The domain authorisation code will be displayed on the domain’s information page. You will need to provide this code to GoDaddy to verify and initiate the transfer on that end.

Please note that a full transfer can take up to 20 days to complete. After it is done, you will need to take steps to connect your domain to Shopify. When it comes to connecting the domain, it will involve you making change to some records within the DNS settings on your GoDaddy account where you have the domain. More specifically, the following are the changes you need to make:

  • The A record should point to 23.227.38.65.
  • The CNAME record should point to shops.myshopify.com.

After you make these changes, it could take up to 48 hours for them to go through, after which you will be able to go to your Shopify admin ‘Online store’ > ‘Domains’ section, and select 'Connect existing domain’. I have the full steps on that for you here.

However, if it does not need to be hosted with GoDaddy, please do verify the steps that need to be taken so that we can see what can be done!
