As a Belgian company, we have many customers from Belgium and Netherlands. This means we definitely need to offer iDEAL and Bancontact as payment methods.
So far I created a Stripe account because I believe Stripe is a direct payment provider, which means my customers wouldn’t need to leave the shop during the payment process. See diff here:
Shopify Payments is not yet available for Belgian companies. Therefore, using Stripe seems like a no-brainer because Stripe is also what Shopify Payments is built on. I love working with the most used options.
However, after activating Stripe and connecting it to my Shopify account, in the Shopify settings panel I only see VISA, MasterCard, Amex and Apply Pay. Even after activating Bancontact and iDEAL in the Stripe settings panel, I’m not able to add them in the Shopify settings panel.
I found some Stripe tutorials about how to add these options using “sources”, but I can’t believe this would require actual coding to activate.
My only remaining solution would be to activate Mollie as well, but that would leave me with two different payment providers, which I’d rather avoid… Any help?
That’s not what he’s asking. He said he didn’t want to use Mollie.
Currently, Shopify only offers this option (by phone) but with Stripe it’s possible to associate a BanAccount, you just have to modify the Stripe request, but like him, I don’t know if it’s possible and where to do it.
Hi,
I probably didn’t explain myself correctly
As far as I know, stripe is available to “only” accept credit card payments in countries where Shopify payments isn’t available.
To active other payment options like ideal or bancontact you will have to activate through additional payment options, having a second payment provider.
It is not possible to make changes on the payment gateway connections, this would need to be requested and approved by Shopify/stripe
In fact Stripe has an option to activate “BanContact” and in other forms (other than shopify) you can activate an alternative payment solution “BanContact”.
Do you think that a custom button is a good solution?
It all depends on how much Bancontact payments you expect to have as this would require a complicated custom solution, i.e. you will take the customer to an external checkout, connected to the Stripe gateway, capture the payment and create an order in shopify. For this solution it would be important to analyze all possible scenarios when the customer select this payment as you will have to define different scenarios on the frontend.

Hi Secantscope, I’m a Shopify Partner & Expert and I manage over a 100 webstores with Shopify. I have exactly the same opinion and problem. Thing is: Mollie’s support is as non-existing. No-chat, no phone, no contact option and if you try to email them you can expect an answer within a few days, but never with any solutions only more questions. How can it be sooooo difficult for Shopify to simply integrate the activated payment systems on Stripe, which is already connected? It’s now my 6th time I contacted Stripe & Shopify support, each saying go to Stripe, go to Shopify for this. I WANT solutions, NOT answers.
Thank you so much for your response. I too already use stripe for credit cards but I have a lot of customers in Belgium so I think I’ll go through Mollie. I’ve also seen that Mollie will accept meal vouchers and restaurant tickers.
i just create my own shop on shopify and would like to accept Bancontact and iDeal but after i set them up on mollie, on the client terminal it says Unknown merchant account, and i can’t see why it does that. but you said that i can accept bancontact and iDeal on shopify payments, but i can’t set them up even after reading the article on how to do so. if you can help my set up shopify payments that would be appreciated. thank you
We are happy to assist you integrating “Stripe Ideal” and “Stripe bancocontact” as a payment gateways directly with your Shopify store. (Not through Mollie).
