How to add a subscription product to the cart automatically when a trigger product is added?

I need to add the subscription product to the cart automatically when the trigger product is added to the cart… when the customer adds one product the second product, which can either be a quarterly or annual subscription, is added and the customer must choose the frequency. Why is this so hard? Why is everything on here so freaking hard to do and you have to have a thousand different apps for the simplest things…

Hi @jgriffin124 It sounds simple, but implementing it is not that easy, because everyone have to take account that they need to add code according the app that you are using for subscription product, and then it should shoot according to your needs.

There are 2 options through which you can achieve this,

  1. You can use 3rd party app that can provide you this type of functionality or,
  2. You can add the custom code in your theme so that it can match to your needs.

I have tried many third-party apps and none of them seem to add the second product when I add the trigger product to the cart. This is extremely frustrating and difficult when it really shouldn’t be… Shopify could fix this but it would reduce the number of apps needed, killing off their app store business which I understand, but I feel like monopolizing Shopify would yield better quality stores and increase overall efficiency for the store owners… There is no reason I should need 10 apps just to get two products to work properly when I know the code can be written to optimize this within Shopify itself… charge a higher subscription and optimize the platform = monopolizing the industry for ecommerce and increases overall margins… seems pretty simple to me. Back to this issue… I need the second subscription product to be added to the cart automatically or a pop-up or something that will let my customers purchase the quarterly or annual subscription of refillable ink for my trigger product, the ink pen… please advise. Thanks

Hi @jgriffin124 As I have mentioned, that the task sounds very easy, but to accomplish the same, any app developer should need to work with lot of API’s irrespective of shopify API.

Also Regarding the task, it can only be done with custom code, you need to add javascript, liquid, html and css code to achieve this, this is the only way to achieve this task.
