How can I add the WhatsApp icon next to my social media icons in the footer?

Shopify actually has a guide going through all the steps to add icons to the footer which you can see here!
Can I ask why you want to add the WhatsApp icon also? I understand it is another means of contacting you but is it something you’d use often enough to add here. Personally I would avoid looking to add it and stores which would feature this, which is why I’m asking. I see you have FB and Instagram which potential customers can DM you on should they wish but also serve another purpose of your own content. These are just my thoughts, hope it was helpful!

Yes, it’s a feature my client will be using very often. As far as I’ve
noticed, most of his potential customers are the demographic that are not
familiar with FB and IG as much. Plus, he’s a lot more comfortable with
using WhatsApp.

If the guide I linked can’t quite do what you need, you can contact our theme support team about adding a new image to the footer by using your free 60 minute design time if you have not already. The design time is for merchants using a free Shopify theme (which you are with Debut) and if you are on a paid plan. If you qualify for that and haven’t used the design time, this would be a perfect use for it. You can contact the support team via the link here.
