How to apply free shipping when redeeming gift cards

Very keen to use your Gift Card feature, but unfortunately I’ve hit a snag for my use case.

We’ve priced our gift card denominations to match the prices of our products, but we would like that when a customer redeems a gift card that free shipping be applied automatically (so the redeeming customer doesn’t need to pay anything extra… after all, this is a gift!).

Sadly, automatic discounts won’t work as they don’t have conditions to detect when a gift card is being redeemed (and even if they did, it currently doesn’t have the option to apply “free shipping”, only “percentage”, “fixed amount” or “buy X get Y”).

A new shipping rate or shipping profile under Shipping and Delivery won’t do, as it also doesn’t detect if a gift card is being redeemed (only conditions for weight or over a certain amount spent).

And Discount codes can’t be sold in your store like a redeemable product.

I’m a bit stuck. Any help would be much appreciated!

I created discount codes using a bulk code generator as I have 100 codes I need to provide to partner. I have no way of tying free shipping to the codes. Any ideas?

Hey! Yeah, unfortunately 6 months on and not a word from Shopify on this.

The best I could come up with was to increase the amount on the gift cards to cover the cost of standard shipping. For example, a $100 gift card would sell for $100, but provide $105 of credit (i.e. $5 for shipping).

Not great for multiple reasons. Doesn’t cover more expensive shipping options (rural, etc..), doesn’t prevent the customer from redeeming that $5 elsewhere in the store (instead of on shipping), etc…

Would prefer a proper solution for this, as ultimately I had to abandon the whole idea of gift cards in the meantime. @Shopify_77 , any thing to say?

This really needs to be fixed, as i suggested to @Shopify_77 in the other post.

@NurseNicky Did you test this idea before giving up on the cards?
