How to fix the 'Your connection is not private' error on my website?

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner has been receiving customer complaints about a “Your connection is not private” browser security warning appearing on their website. This error significantly damages customer trust, even though Shopify support claims there are no issues on their end.

Key Details:

  • The warning appears when customers click links from sources like Facebook or LinkPop, and sometimes when simply opening Chrome
  • The domain was purchased through Shopify years ago and is not new
  • After multiple support interactions (approximately 6 attempts), no resolution was found initially

Resolution:

  • Shopify support (Chris) eventually suggested adding a subdomain redirect
  • Specifically, setting up the main domain to redirect with “www” prefix
  • This configuration appears to have resolved the issue
  • The store owner had not previously set up this www redirect

Over the past few years I’ve received customer messages saying that my site is “Unsafe”.

The old “Your connection is not private” message absolutely kills trust regardless if there is a workaround or specific browser issue.

Shopify says it’s fine. No error on their end.

I’ve gone through it with “support” about 6 times. Always the same… no resolution.

Been using Shopify for many years. Domain name is not new. Purchased from Shopify way back.

Happens when I click from something like FB or Linkpop… but also often when simply opening Chrome.

Has anybody found a real solution?

Thanks

Received a message (with a video even) from Chris at Shopify support.

He suggested I add a subdomain to my main domain with “www”. It seems I did not have this set up.

Looks like it works.
