How to offer gift subscriptions using Recharge app without Shopify Plus?

We are looking for a way for shoppers to give gift subscriptions. We use Recharge as our subscription app, which does not offer gift subscriptions unless you use Govalo to give gift cards (which our customers do not like since recipients of gifts want to simply receive a subscription in the mail as a surprise, not to get handed homework from Govalo to sign up for a subscription). Without shopify plus we cannot edit the checkout to indicate a sale is a gift purchase.

Are there any good workarounds for this or examples of other stores that have used custom coding to design a user experience for customers to indicate an order is a gift order? We also need a tag to get added to the order in shopify so we can segment marketing differently to gift orders vs. people purchasing for themselves.

This functionality is too specific to be covered by a ready Shopify app. You can think about custom app development. An experienced Shopify development company can easily develop a custom app for you to meet these needs.

Do you do this kind of work? Can you suggest how an app can work to solve this?

Please, clarify - the requirement to indicate that this is a gift order on checkout is only needed for marketing purposes? Or do you want to design totally different user experience for customers instead of entering different billing and shipping info?

We have worked a lot with Recharge and there is an option to simply add a meta attribute for an order to indicate it is a gift. And this will help you to differentiate your marketing activities.

Hello - I wanted to offer another option for subscription gifting. Our app, Givy, enables subscription (and product, and gift card) gifting for any existing subscription or membership app. (https://apps.shopify.com/givy)

Some of the benefits of using Givy:

  • You don’t need to know the recipient’s shipping address (who wants to receive a random package without context, anyway?)
  • Customers can buy multiple gifts, and send them to multiple recipients
  • Recipients become subscribers, so they become customers after their gift expires
  • Customers can decide how many orders they want to send as gifts
  • Personalized videos, messages, GIFs, etc… can be added to the gift notification
  • The gift email can be sent at a future date, and the recipient can choose when to receive the first gift
