How to properly set up DMARC on a domain purchased through Shopify?

I’m so confused by this DMARC thing. I have watched every video out there, but nobody shows information for those of us that use Shopify as our domain. I don’t use Godaddy or anything like that. I literally purchased through shopify and my URL ends with myshopify.com.
So how do I go about ensuring I’m compliant and have the DMARC set up properly? I’m ready to rip my hair out because none of the instructions I find explain my scenario.

Hi, @Shannalynn01

Greetings, and thanks for posting!

DMARC is a record that Yahoo, and Gmail require be added to your DNS settings if you use a custom email such as hello@yourstore . If you aren’t using a custom email, or you don’t add a DMARC record to your domain, Shopify will use store@shopifyemail.com as your sender email.

I notice you mention your domain ends in .myshopify.com still. If that is the case, you wouldn’t need to add DMARC as you don’t have a custom domain and the store@shopifyemail.com would be used. If, however, you do have a custom domain hosted by Shopify, you should already have a DMARC added to your DNS settings by default. You can check this by heading to Settings > Domains > Domain Settings > DNS Settings > Then scroll down and you should see the DMARC record.

If you are using a third party domain you can use our guide here to add the DMARC record to your DNS Records.

I hope that helps!

I can go to settings > domains but then I don’t see the other 2 options. I literally feel so dumb right now…lol

I found this guide https://powerdmarc.com/setup-dmarc-dkim-spf-shopify/ and used powerdmarc.com to generate DMARC and SPF records, it’s easy and fast.

This appears as thought I have to purchase a 3rd party software to do most of the stuff required. I’m not wanting to pay for anything more as this should just be a simple fix with Shopify to ensure validity. I am either missing something or I’m really that dumb to figure this out because I’ve literally followed every step imaginable and half of it I had already done when I joined Shopify.

You have to click on your domain that you use for your store then click domain settings in the top left of the screen.

I totally get where you’re coming from, it can be really confusing. Just to make sure I’m on the right track in helping you out, did you get a Shopify store, just the domain, or both? Knowing this will help us zero in on the issue, especially since Shopify is all about domains and websites and doesn’t really handle the email side of things.

I don’t have that option in the top left of the screen.

I use shopify so my website is https://a-creative-life20.myshopify.com

I didn’t buy a domain that doesn’t use myshopify.com

I will say that my emails through shopify are not being seen by over 50% of the ones I’m sending too, so I know they are going to spam. Then again I was using mailchimp at one time too and many more of those were going to spam as well; that is why I left mailchimp and utilized shopify instead. Merging the 2 was worst than just using the one…LOL!

Yes it is possible to do this manually. However, from your response itself I can perceive that the process is confusing for you and you’re encountering problems. This is not uncommon. Implementing email authentication protocols with a help from a third-party vendor like PowerDMARC ensures the process is seamless and automatic, it will also ensure that you don’t end up negatively impacting your email deliverability (which can happen if you configure protocols incorrectly). The sign-up is free, and you can get in touch with their DMARC experts for one-on-one guidance as well!

Your issue isn’t with DMARC since you’re using Shopify’s default domain and haven’t got a custom one, yet :slightly_smiling_face: First, purchase a custom domain from Shopify. This allows you to set up email forwarding to your Gmail or use Google Workspace. Then, you can implement DMARC to help with email deliverability.

For guidance on setting up email with your domain, check Shopify’s help pages on Email Forwarding and Email Hosting.
