How to resolve canonical issues and orphan pages in our eCommerce store?

Hi there we have a store with the below issues and we have no idea where these collections are coming from as we cant search the collection from the admin panel and most have the path

storename.com/collections/all/vendor name1

storename.com/collections/all/vendor name2

storename.com/collections/all/vendor name3 and so on

We have 24 vendors and these are all picked up by SEMRush as duplicate meta titles and descriptions.

When we enter storename.com/collections/all/vendor name1 in the browser it goes to the exact url but descriptions and meta are all from storename.com/collections/all

Second issue we have is that most of the product pages are all picked up as orphans pages even though they are part of the collections and we have noticed after 2 years that sem rush is still not crawling them

Canonical issues refer to situations where multiple URLs on a website have the same or similar content, which can cause confusion for search engines and potentially harm the website’s search engine rankings. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • Duplicate content
  • HTTP vs HTTPS
  • www vs non-www
  • URL parameters

It sounds like you have a few different issues with your Shopify store. Let me see if I can help you out with some possible solutions.

Regarding the first issue, where you have collections with vendor names that are causing duplicate meta titles and descriptions, it’s possible that these collections were created through a third-party app or a custom code. To fix this issue, you can try the following steps:

  1. Check if you have any third-party apps that might be creating these collections. You can do this by going to your Shopify admin panel and navigating to Apps > Installed apps. If you find any apps that are related to collections, try disabling them and see if the issue is resolved.

  2. If you don’t find any apps, try checking your theme’s code to see if there are any custom collections being created. You can do this by going to Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit code, and then searching for the collections/all folder. If you find any code that’s creating vendor-specific collections, you can either remove it or modify it to include unique meta titles and descriptions for each collection.

Regarding the second issue, where your product pages are not being crawled by SEMRush, it’s possible that these pages are not properly linked to your collections.

Here are a few things you can try:

  1. Check if your product pages have the correct canonical tags. Canonical tags are used to tell search engines which version of a page to index, in case there are multiple versions of the same page. Make sure that your product pages have canonical tags that point to their corresponding collection pages.

  2. Check if your product pages are properly linked to your collections. You can do this by going to the product page and checking if the collection name is displayed. If it’s not, try editing the product and adding it to the correct collection.

  3. Check if your collections are properly linked to your navigation menu. If your collections are not easily accessible from your homepage, SEMRush might not be able to crawl them properly. Make sure that your collections are added to your navigation menu and that they are easy to find.

I hope these suggestions help you resolve your issues with your Shopify store.
