How to set different shipping rates for alcoholic and non-alcoholic products on Shopify?

At the moment we are building a Shopify web store and I am running into a specific problem when calculating shipping prices.

  1. We are a distiller of alcoholic beverages in the Netherlands and therefore we are required to send our alcoholic beverages to customers with age verification at the door of the customer, this adds to the price of shipping.

  2. On the other hand we also offer non-alcoholic products that do not require this age verification option, therefore shipping is cheaper for these products.

The problem we are running into is, if we set different shipping rates for these products, that when someone orders alcoholic AND non-alcoholic beverages the shipping costs for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages get combined. Instead, in this situation, we would like to apply the rates for alcoholic shipping ONLY and not a combination of the two.

My question is: does Shopify offer a solution to this problem or does any other app in the Shopify app store?

Hi @LuukStillery ,

This is a very common scenario, when using multiple shipping profiles, if orders contain products from different profiles or locations, this will result in combined rates at the checkout. I think a similar thing is happening in your case. The only workaround for your shipping requirement will be an app like Multi Carrier Shipping Label app. The app allows you to set multiple shipping rules and completely automates your shipping process.

Thank you for your reply. I have indeed heard of 3rd party solutions and I am wondering which you would recommend? So far I have seen Advanced Shipping Rules, Ship Better and the app you just mentioned.

Hello!

I hope you don’t mind me messaging, are you in the UK? If you are, may I ask what carrier service you use for your age verification shipping? Our store also needs an age verification service when the parcel is handed to the customer however it’s seeming very difficult to find a carrier/service which works well with Shopify.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!
