How to set up 301 redirect for specific URLs on my website?

Greetings all,

I’ve recently ran an SEO rank check on my website and it tells me that I don’t have URL redirects for the following two URL’s:

http://www.silkscatstore.com/

https://www.silkscatstore.com/

I would like it so that they redirect to https://silkscatstore.com.

Any help here would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for reaching out with your question about your domain forwarding. I believe I can help you with this!

Right now, when I follow the URLs http://www.silkscatstore.com and https://www.silkscatstore.com I am seeing a “This site can’t be reached” error. This usually means that the CNAME WWW record is not setup properly or the WWW version of the domain is not connected to any website.

In order for these domains to redirect to the non WWW URL you will want to add www.silkcatstore.com as a secondary domain in your Shopify store admin and make sure that your CNAME WWW record is setup properly as well. Once connected as a secondary domain, you can enable redirection to your primary domain (silkcatstore.com) which will automatically apply the 301 redirect you are looking for! To simplify this, please follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that the domain DNS settings are setup properly as per our instructions in our Help Center.

    1. Your A record should point to Shopify’s IP address, which is 23.227.38.65.
    2. Your www CNAME record should point to shops.myshopify.com.
  2. Make sure you have both your WWW version of the domain and non WWW version of the domain in your domains list in the Shopify admin. You can add the missing domain by following these steps:

    1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Domains.
    2. Click Connect existing domain.
    3. Enter the domain that you want to connect, such as [www.silkcatstore.com](http://www.silkcatstore.com).
    4. Click Next.
  3. Once both domains are connected and showing in the list you can set your primary domain as silkcatstore.com and then enable the option for domain forwarding.

    1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online store > Domains.
    2. In the Primary domain section, click Enable redirections.
    3. Click Enable redirections again.

Once those steps are completed, please allow up to 48 hours for all DNS changes to finish applying and your 301 redirects should be live and working! Let me know if you have any issues with this or if the problem persists.

Shays’ answer is on point. However, it could have also been DNS propagation. You add the CNAME record, then gotta wait, it can takes anywhere from a few minutes to a couple days to fully propagate out the DNS changes and start working. If you recently made the change, or hooked up the domain to Shopify this could be the culprit.

You can use tools like whatsmydns.net to get an idea of propagation completeness globally.

The lingering ‘x’ marks could indicate the change is recent - eg:
