I need help: low conversions and sales despite high traffic volume

Topic summary

Main issue: Traffic jumped from 150–2,000 visits/day, but conversion remains under 1%. The store owner believes product, photos, and mobile theme are strong and seeks actionable fixes.

Recent updates/actions:

  • Mobile usability problems flagged: unreadable dark menu and overlapping chat widgets (screenshot shared). The owner changed the menu color and removed one chat option; a follow-up confirmed improved navigation.
  • Owner notes traffic growth came after renewed effort since the new year and promptly applying expert feedback, but conversion still lags.

Key recommendations shared:

  • Analyze the conversion funnel to find the weak step. Suggested benchmarks: View → Add to Cart 8–10%; Add to Cart → Checkout 50–60%; Checkout → Purchase 50–60%. One example showed View → Add at 2.49%, with later steps near 50%.
  • Add customer reviews to build trust; one participant claims 90%+ of shoppers check reviews. An app (Ali Reviews) was suggested to collect/display reviews.
  • Implement on-site tactics: targeted exit-intent/scroll pop-ups with incentives, tiered offers/free-shipping progress bars, social-proof notifications, and gamified email capture. Another app (Revenue Boost) was cited, with a reported lift from <1% to >1.5% conversion and +15% AOV (average order value).

Status: Some UI fixes done; broader conversion optimization remains open. No confirmed impact on conversion yet.

I need help.

I have exceptional products. I have great photos. I have a mobile optimized theme.

In the past few weeks, I have increased the traffic to my site from 150 visitors per day to 1500-2k visitors per day and my rate of conversion is still less than 1%.

I welcome feedback, provided there is an actionable solution.

Thank you in advance.

Angela

From what I can see at a quick glance, 2 things. Your menu bar on my phone shows such a dark grey, I can’t even read the menu items. 2nd you have a chat with us and a messenger option. They both open where they run into each other.

Thank you for sharing your feedback: I went in and updated the menu color and removed one of the chatbox options. I appreciate your time! Angela

Looks much better! As a question to you, how have you been able to grow your website with the traffic you have been able to? My wife’s site has been slow to gain traffic. It is trending upward, but slow. Where you have grown quickly which is great! You will get the conversations you are looking for soon now that the navigation is fixed. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for taking a second look: I appreciate it. :slightly_smiling_face:

I have been on Shopify since before the holidays, and I am just now starting to gain momentum. Truthfully, I didn’t apply as much effort towards building the site as I could have until the start of the new year. When I’ve solicited feedback from the experts, I’ve taken notes and applied the info immediately.

Naturally, because I have done the work, it’s frustrating to me to see the visitor numbers climbing and not receive a better rate of conversion.

Hello @APalsrok ,

I checked out your website, and I’m impressed with the products you offer.

Analyzing your conversion funnel will help you figure out where your store needs to be improved. Consider these things when you do a store analysis (just in case you didn’t know about them before).

  • View Content → Add To Cart: 8% to 10%
  • Add to Cart → Initiate Checkout: 50-60%
  • Initiate Checkout → Purchase: 50-60%

For example:

  • View Content → Add to Cart: 2.49%
(The percentage next to “Added to cart”)
  • Add To Cart → Initiate Checkout: (608/1208)*100 = 50.3%
Divide “reached checkout” sessions by “added to cart” sessions.
  • Initiate Checkout → Purchase: (329/608)*100 = 54.1%
Divide “Sessions converted” sessions by “Reached checkout” sessions.

As you can see in the example above, the unsatisfactory point is from the step “View Content” to “Add to Cart”, but the other steps are doing good. So, from “View Content” to “Add to Cart,” there is room for improvement.

Now you can start calculating to see where you need to improve.

Furthermore, I realized that your store is missing a customer review section. Because more than 90% of shoppers check reviews before making a purchase, this might influence your store’s reputation. To collect more reviews, you should build a customer review section on your website and make it easier for customers to write reviews. You can then use these reviews to improve your marketing effectiveness.

Let Ali Review help. Trusted by hundreds of thousands of merchants and with thousands of 5* reviews, Ali Reviews not only helps you to collect and display reviews but also turns reviews into the most effective marketing material and increases your conversion rate. Try it free.

I hope this will be helpful to you. Best wishes!

Hi Angela, congratulations on driving more traffic to your store! Once you reach 1,500+ visitors a day, even small improvements in conversion can make a big difference. Here are a few tactics that worked for us:

– Use targeted pop-ups: exit-intent or scroll pop-ups with an incentive (discount, free shipping) help convert visitors who are about to leave. We set ours to appear only after a visitor views at least one product so the offer feels relevant.
– Offer tiered incentives to increase basket size: a free-shipping progress bar or tiered discount (e.g. spend $50 get 15% off; spend $100 get 25% off) encourages shoppers to add one more item. This not only lifts conversion rate but also raises AOV.
– Leverage social proof: real-time notifications showing recent purchases, low stock alerts or reviews build trust quickly for first-time visitors.
– Grow your email list: gamified sign-up experiences like spin-to-win wheels and scratch cards can double or triple sign-ups. Once you have their email, you can follow up with targeted offers and reminders if they don’t purchase right away.

We implemented these strategies using Revenue Boost, an app that provides templates for pop-ups, free-shipping bars, upsells, social-proof notifications, and gamified email capture. It also has built-in A/B testing and smart targeting so you can see which offers perform best. After implementing it, we saw our conversion rate increase from under 1% to more than 1.5% and our average order value rise by 15%. Hope these ideas help!
