Invalid API token

AI-generated summary

A Shopify integration provider reports that a merchant’s API access token repeatedly becomes invalid a few hours after a successful connection. After reconnecting, the new token also turned invalid within hours, halting data retrieval.

Context: They authenticate to Shopify using the store URL and a generated Shopify Access Token to fetch data. API (Application Programming Interface) access relies on that token as the credential for requests.

Error returned: {“errors”: “[API] Invalid API key or access token (unrecognized login or wrong password)”}.

Scope: This behavior is unprecedented for them; other users have not experienced similar token invalidation.

Request: They seek potential causes—whether due to the merchant’s store settings or common reasons an access token might become invalid.

Status: No identified cause or resolution yet; the thread remains open with unanswered questions.

Hello!

My name is Ophelia and I work for a company that provides Shopify integrations and have been for some years. I am in a quite big need of assistance as we’ve bumped into something in Shopify API that we have not seen before.

Our users connect to Shopify through our Platform and we retrieve data from Shopify with their store URL and the generated Shopify Access Token. Yesterday we saw something for the first time ever - one of our users token became invalid. They connected and we could fetch data without any issues. A couple hours later the Token became invalid and Shopify returned the following:

{
“errors”: “[API] Invalid API key or access token (unrecognized login or wrong password)”
}

They tried to reconnect and everything was OK for a couple hours before the new Access Token also became invalid.

We have never seen this with any other user before and hence we’re very confused. Does anyone know what the cause of this could be? Is it something in their Shopify store/settings specifically? Or what are common reasons for an Access Token to become invalid?

Thank you in advance!

Kind Regards,
Ophelia
