Is there an update on gift card recipients receiving emails?

Hi Shopify,

i saw a thread in 2020 about the recipient of gift cards getting the email instead of the buyer being considered by Shopify. I guess still no luck in having this feature embedded into the gift cards?

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I’m happy to provide some guidance on issuing gift cards, to get this resolved. To provide some context, it is the email used at checkout that the gift card is issued too. In the case a customer was purchasing as a gift for another individual, they have a few options:

  • Purchase the gift card using their email address, then forward it to the individual after receiving it.
  • Using the email address of the individual the gift card is being sent to at checkout.
  • You can update the email address attached to the gift card and re-send the email accordingly after the initial purchase.

For more information on managing gift cards, I recommend checking out our Selling Gift Cards documentation. As I can completely understand how this may not be ideal, I’m happy to make note of this limitation with our Developers. We are always looking for ways to improve the platform and appreciate the feedback!

I’ve just scoured the community for a solution to this as well and was hoping to reply to you and ask if this can be boosted a feature request once more. It’s frankly a bit unbelievable that this has been a known issue for years at this point, and Shopify still has not addressed it. There are several threads on this exact issue dating back for years that are deceivingly marked “Solved”, only to show dozens of shop owners begging for a solution, with a staffer stating that they’ll “tell the developers” and several high-priced apps offered as the only solution. The holidays are upon us once again, and the ability for a customer to send to someone else is an essential and expected function of a gift card. How can we get this to be considered seriously?
