Shopify does not provide an option to enter the dimensions for a package. Therefore, you cannot use any of the shipping services accurately.
Is there a solution to get around this issue?
Why Shopify does not fix this problem by simply adding 3 columns (L, W, H) next to the weight? There are flex fields available, all they need to do is to standardize 3 of those fields and allow the merchants to simply use them. This makes life a lot easier all across the board
I can understand your concern and if you are open to using a shipping solution then I would suggest you take a look at the PH MultiCarrier Shipping Label. The app allows you to set product dimensions so that you can get accurate rates at the checkout.
Feel free to reach out if there is any query. I will be happy to help!
I appreciate how frustrating it can be to not have perfectly calculated rates reflected at checkout. However, I do want to point out that we provide the ability to add custom package dimensions in your shipping settings. Once these dimensions are added, when purchasing a label you have the ability to select one of your preset package sizes. However, as you mentioned, we don’t have the ability to assign this package to certain products at the customer’s checkout. Thus, the label price can be slightly different from what the customer selects.
However, what we recommend is to size your default package size to your average order value. This means that sometimes customers will overpay, and sometimes they will underpay. While not ideal, it will generally balance itself out.
Another option is to use one of the available shipping apps. A great option is Advanced Shipping Rules, which allows you to apply certain package sizes to certain orders and products. These apps, however, do cost money.
While I can’t guarantee that multiple default package sizes will be an option in the future, I can assure you this feedback has been heard, and I do hope it becomes a reality. I can see how important and useful this would be for many merchants!
It’s been a while but I need to second the feedback already given: Suggesting another $9/month app, to accomplish something that just needs three fields for package dimensions, might be peanuts for big companies but for solo businesses those $108 per year are a steep price point.
Take my case: I sell prints. Sending a big print abroad costs me 25 EUR. Sending a small postcard abroad costs me 5 EUR. It doesn’t make sense for me to calculate shipping based on an average order value because either I’ll ask for a horrendous shipping rate for small items (essentially making sales impossible), or lose all my profit margin on larger items (essentially making sales useless).
The shop software shouldn’t dictate how I run my business.
