Looking for a developer with 3rd party payment integrations experience

Topic summary

Hiring request for a developer to integrate Shopify with Paddle (a global merchant of record, i.e., the provider legally responsible for transactions). Store sells 4 digital products using the Sky Pilot app.

Key constraints and updates:

  • Paddle is not a native Shopify payment gateway; Shopify checkout allows only approved providers. External checkout may be possible via custom scripts and webhook-based order sync (webhooks = automated callbacks to push data), depending on store setup.
  • Bypassing Shopify checkout to use a Paddle overlay may require written consent from Shopify; otherwise there’s risk to the store’s compliance.
  • The legacy “additional-scripts” for the Thank You page is deprecated. Customization should use the new Checkout Blocks and Order Status pages; redirecting to Sky Pilot may be needed.

Current workflow attempted (not completed):

  • Shopify product selection → triggers Paddle overlay → payment captured in Paddle → Paddle webhook → Cloudflare middleware → data stored in Shopify for confirmations/order history/customer data.

Requests:

  • Best technical approach for this use case.
  • Recommendations for a Shopify-native merchant of record (UK store, sells globally; cannot use Managed Markets).

Resources suggested: Shopify supported gateways link; contact experienced Shopify partners.

Status: No solution chosen yet; discussion remains open pending technical approach and MoR options.

Hi there, I’m looking to hire a developer who has experience in integrating Shopify with 3rd party payment gateways. In my case, I want to integrate with Paddle (https://www.paddle.com/). Please only respond if you truly have experience with this type of integrations.

Hey @maia31,

Thanks for posting this to Shopify community.

Paddle isn’t supported as a native Shopify payment gateway because Shopify only allows approved providers inside checkout. However, it can be integrated in specific cases using external checkout flows, custom scripts, or automation tools (like webhook - based order sync). It depends on the store setup and the products being sold.

If you would I can outline the best technical approach for your use-case and what’s realistically possible without breaking Shopify’s checkout rules.

Waiting to hear back from you.

Thanks

Thank you so much for getting back to me! My store has just 4 digital products. I had another developer who did some work, but failed to finish it. He did use Cloudflare as well. Here is the workflow he tried to implement:

  • Customer visits Shopify site.
  • Finds products they like and presses checkout
  • This will then open up the Paddle Overlay checkout
  • Card details entered and paid. Information is stored in Paddle.
  • Webhook trigger in Paddle.
  • Sends data to middleware (Cloudflare).
  • Middleware then process data and stores it in Shopify.
  • Shopify can then do stuff with this data. Like send Order confirmation or display order history in customer dashboard.
  • Also customer data is then stored in Shopify.

The problem is he couldn’t actually finish it. Also, he couldn’t make sure the ‘thank-you’ page is the one on the Sky Pilot app (this is the digital downloads app I’m using).

It would be great if you could outline the best technical approach. Let me know if you need more details about my store/website.

Also, can you recommend me a Shopify native merchant of record? I cannot use Managed Markets, as my store is UK-based. But I sell globally. I want paddle because it is a global merchant of record. But I’m open to others, if they are Shopify native and easy to implement.

@maia31 Here is the link to supported gateways, check it

Hi @maia31 :waving_hand: I’m @PaulNewton shopify-partner with a range of merchant solutions.
It can help to know what the stack for the custom app is, programming languages, hosting(e.g. is cloudflare just cdn or edge workers), etc.

:bomb: You need to make sure you have Shopifys written consent for this to bypass the checkout.

Even if the dev said it’s okay you need to get it yourself as the owner.
Or risk having the store removed from shopify.

That just sounds like a redirect and nothing much to do with payments.
Unfortunately additional-scripts for the thank you page is deprecated.
So it needs with the checkout blocks new Thank you and Order status pages
