Meta Fields

Some of our products are showing that there is errors occurring under the publishing channels for Google & YouTube due to not having the “suggested Meta fields” filled out. Why is it effecting the publishing channels and how will it effect the search ability of these products?

Hey there @Shea_Fogarty,

This is actually a pretty common issue when connecting Shopify to Google Merchant Center, so don’t worry, you’re not alone!

Short explanation: Google needs specific details about your products to properly categorize and display them in Shopping results. Things like color, material, age group, or a GTIN (barcode number) help Google understand exactly what you’re selling.

When those fields are missing, a couple of things happen:

Your products get hidden from filtered searches. If someone searches for a specific material or filters by age group, your listing simply won’t appear. And Google tends to rank products with complete data higher, so competitors who’ve filled everything out will naturally show up before you.

The quick fix is to go into your Shopify admin and fill in those missing fields manually. It’s straightforward for a small catalog, but honestly it gets tedious fast as your store grows.

If you’d rather not do it by hand, you can try SearchPie, which can handle a lot of that metadata work for you automatically.

Hope this helps,
