Need Help Importing Inventory with SKUs and Barcodes to Shopify

Hello Shopify Community,

I need some guidance on how to set up my inventory in my Shopify store. I already have the inventory ready with SKUs created by the factory, and each box is labeled with a barcode. However, I’m unsure about the best way to transfer this information into my Shopify store.

Specifically, I’d like to know:

  1. How do I import the SKUs and barcodes into Shopify effectively?
  2. Are there any tools or apps you recommend for managing inventory with barcodes?
  3. What’s the best way to ensure that the inventory data matches the physical stock I have on hand?

I’d appreciate any tips, step-by-step instructions, or resources you could share. Thank you in advance for your help!

Looking forward to your advice.

Hi @Arty11 ,

I think that you can try to export CSV file and try to import that. Here’s some steps that you can try

  1. Export Your Product Data:

    • Go to Products > All products in your Shopify admin.

    • Click on Export and choose the desired export options.

  2. Prepare Your CSV File:

    • Open the exported CSV file in a spreadsheet application like Excel or Google Sheets.

    • Add columns for SKUs and barcodes if they are not already present.

    • Fill in the SKUs and barcodes for each product.

  3. Import the CSV File:

    • Go to Products > All products in your Shopify admin.

    • Click on Import and upload your CSV file.

    • Shopify will update your products with the new SKUs and barcodes

I hope that my solution works for you.

Best regards,

Hey, sounds like you’re in a good spot already with SKUs and barcodes sorted out. A couple ideas that could help with getting everything into Shopify:

1. Use a CSV file to import directly into Shopify
You can start with Shopify’s product CSV template and make sure to include these key fields:

  • Handle (basically your product identifier)

  • Variant SKU

  • Variant Barcode

  • Variant Inventory Qty

Once that’s ready, use Shopify’s built-in import tool. Just a heads up, it can be picky about formatting so double check for typos or weird spacing before uploading.

2. Try a tool like Altera to make it easier
If you’re dealing with a lot of SKUs or just want something more flexible, check out Altera. It lets you bulk import from Excel or CSV, shows you any errors upfront with links to fix them, and generally makes the process smoother. You can also export your current inventory, make updates in Excel, and re-upload everything in one go.

3. If you’re using barcodes to track physical stock
If you’re planning to scan barcodes for inventory checks or shipping, you could look into apps like Stocky (free if you’re using Shopify POS Pro) or something like Multi-Location Inventory Info if you’re managing stock across multiple spots.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you want more info on any of these steps.
