I need a way to make it so people can pre order items via my website. See the URL below to show the items for example that show sold out but they need to be able to be pre ordered. How do I do this? I run Dawn theme.
If you are looking to have your product available for pre-order, you can follow this coding guide here that will walk you through how to do this. You mentioned you are using the Dawn theme though; this theme runs on the Online Store 2.0 systems so the coding guide would not be compatible with that specific theme. In this case, I would recommend looking into using an app! There is a full range of apps here that will add some extra functionality to your store.
Can I ask why you’d like to take pre-orders at the moment? Are you building an ad campaign around the release of the product? I’d love to hear more about your plans!
I am wanting to take pre orders as a lot of the stock I will sell shortly are on a pre order basis. The more orders I get the more I can order from my supplier. I found most of the apps need me to pay an incredibly high fee to add a pre order function… Some even expect me to pay the same as I pay to run my entire website!
If you want to just buy the customization contact me at paull.newton+shopifyforums@gmail.com with store url, storefront-pass, theme , this topic url and any other relevant use case details.
She said the tutorial would not work with my theme though? I can follow code tutorials easily but that one doesn’t seem to work for my site. She said that the dawn theme can’t be changed to have that function?
That is true I’m afraid, the coding guide I mentioned will work for older themes but not for Dawn. This is because Dawn is a totally new theme from Shopify, and its coding structure is a little different to our older themes to allow for extra functionality. I included the guide in case someone using an older theme came across his post - it might help them out! We would not have coding guides for this theme at the moment, but we do have some documentation here on customisations you can make to Dawn. I did find an unsupported, third-party guide here if you wanted to take a look, just to see if it is something that can help.
I understand what you mean about the apps though, it’s important for businesses to keep their costs down. There is an app here that is free to use called Pre-Order Alpha, it is well worth checking out as it will keep your costs down.
There is the other option of just continuing to sell the product when it goes out of stock:
This will let you still take sales even if the inventory is at 0, as long as you are tracking the quantity. You can add a note to the product title or description that the products are on sale but will be shipped as soon as new inventory arrives. This will give you an idea of how many orders you receive so you know how many to order from your supplier! Would that option work for you as a workaround?
