Newsletter signup: treatment of existing customers who subscribe (or subscribe again)

Hoping somebody could help me with the following. I’m working on a custom theme for which I’d like to make use of the standard Shopify newsletter facility, so that subscribers are added as customers (even if they haven’t yet bought anything).

Although I’ve got that working, I’ve noticed that if I fill in the subscribe form twice and on the first occasion only fill in the required fields (email address) but on the second occasion also fill in the optional fields (first name, last name etc), the customer record created from the first sign-up doesn’t get updated with the additional information.

Is that something I can do anything about, or is that just a limitation of the system? If latter, I guess I might have to look at a third-party mailing list like Mailchimp (but that was something I was hoping to avoid).

Have you had any luck? I’m trying to get Users tagged if they signup to a specific newsletter form.

I added the tag to the form, and works for new subscriptions, but can’t update existing records.
