Hi everyone, I’m looking for help setting up an online shop to sell handmade jewellery. I’d like to create a website where customers can customise their orders at checkout by choosing options like different stones, metals, necklace lengths, etc.

This is something you can do easily on Etsy, but I’m wondering if Shopify has similar functionality. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, would I need a specific Shopify plan to make it work?

Also if anyone knows what sort of pricing I would be looking at for this then that would be handy too!

@eviescarlett99 Yes, Shopify can support your requirements for a customizable online shop.
There are 2 ways to add customization options.

1. Use Shopify’s built-in features.
2. Install a product customization app.
   The Basic Shopify Plan ($39/month) is sufficient for setting up a shop and adding apps. Higher-tier plans offer more reporting and tools but aren’t necessary at the start.
   Customizations are selected on the product page, not at checkout. Start with the Basic Plan, add a theme, and install a customization app for a seamless setup.

Hi @eviescarlett99 Assume $50~$125~ month for plan and apps for that core behavior, higher end to do it well.

And that’s core behavior for some customizable products not including other supporting apps or extraneous needs.

Currently once a merchant goes past 3 product options, or 100 variants, apps or theme customizations are required to work around that native behavior.

FYI: there are upcoming features of 2k variants per product which may remove the need for paid apps in some cases; but I wouldn’t hold me breath on it.

Using Third-Party Apps:

For more complex customization options, third-party apps can provide enhanced functionality. You can find the apps from Shopify app store. Make sure you’re going through the ratings and reviews before choosing the one.

Shopify Plan Requirements:

The Basic Shopify Plan is sufficient for setting up a shop and adding apps. Start with the Basic Plan, add a theme, and install a customization app.

Also, please note that customizations will be possible on the product page itself and not during checkout.

This can be done easily in built in shopify plan and you can start with low plan

There are multiple benefits of have your own store apart from ETSY which you already have.

Shopify has 3 variant selection options with a total combination of 100 as compared to ETSY

In Shopify you have free email marketing too as built-in feature

On product page, collection page and cart page any kind of customization can be done too with the help of custom coding
