Product shown as soldout even when product available in inventory

My new products are shown as sold out.

What’s stranger is that I start by duplicating an old product that has an inventory number > than 0 AND that appear as available. However the new duplicated products are shown as SOLD OUT.

I made sure to mark each product as ‘Continue Selling when out of stock’ which DID FIX the issue. However, why are these items marked as SOLD OUT in the first place specially when they are duplicates from other products and they do not appear as SOLD OUT?

Hi @SimonSales

It sounds like you’re running into a frustrating issue where duplicated products are showing as Sold Out, even though the original product had inventory available. Let’s break down what might be causing this and how to fix it properly.

Why is this happening?

When you duplicate a product in Shopify, the new product does not inherit the inventory settings of the original product. Instead, it’s created as a separate item with zero inventory by default, unless otherwise specified.

Since your original product has inventory available, it makes sense that it appears as In Stock, but the duplicated version starts at zero—which is why it automatically shows as Sold Out unless you enable “Continue selling when out of stock.”

How to Fix This

Now that we know why it happens, here’s what you can do to prevent this issue:

1-Check Inventory Settings on the Duplicated Product:

  • Go to Products in your Shopify admin.
  • Click on the duplicated product.
  • Scroll down to the Inventory section.
  • Make sure the Inventory quantity is set correctly (it might be at 0).

2-Manually Adjust the Stock:

  • If the inventory is showing 0, update it to the correct stock count.
  • If you’re using Shopify’s inventory tracking, make sure it’s properly linked to the correct location (especially if you have multiple warehouses or fulfillment centers).

3-Check Product Variants (if applicable):

  • If your product has variants (sizes, colors, etc.), make sure each variant has an updated stock quantity.
  • Sometimes, a single variant being out of stock can cause the whole product to appear as Sold Out.

4-Bulk Edit Inventory for Future Duplications:

  • If you often duplicate products, go to Products > Inventory and use the bulk editor to quickly update the stock levels after duplicating.

Final Thoughts

Since enabling “Continue Selling When Out of Stock” temporarily fixed the issue, that confirms that Shopify initially sets duplicated products to zero inventory. Next time, just make sure to check and update stock levels right after duplicating a product.

If you run into this again or need help with anything else, feel free to ask, and I’ll try my best to support you.

Daisy.
