Redeeming Gift Cards Without Email

I apologize if this is a repeat, but I can’t find this answered anywhere.

A customer just came in and didn’t have their gift card email. But I knew they had one because I manually rang them up for one over the holidays. They didn’t have their phone with them, so I tried to pull their code from the Shopify app, but I couldn’t get all of the code (just the last four digits). I ended up giving them a $50 discount (amount of gift card) for their purchase and deactivated their gift card, but now I’m concerned that I’m out that $50 dollars because the card has not been redeemed and is now un-redeemable because I inadvertently deactivated.

It seems odd that we cannot access these codes from the system in which they were generated at POS.

What are my next possible steps here?

This is one of MANY poorly executed feaures that shows me that the folks working on shopify have either never asctaully worked in a small business retail store OR just don’t care to provide needed functionality to us properly. Our work around for this is to email or text the card to ourselves via POS then we can see the the number. You can’t do it via admin.
