I have “Tax Exempt Customers” as well as “Tax Exempt Items” in my prior systems reporting I had a “Taxable Sales” column then a “Non-Taxable Sales” column. If I took the total from the “Taxable Sales” column and multiplied it against our state tax percentage (NJ) it always equaled the “Tax Collected” column. With sales combined in Shopify I don’t know how to easily or accurately break down these numbers. Please help ~ Thank you in advance!
Topic summary
Need: Merchant must separate taxable vs. non-taxable sales to reconcile New Jersey sales tax. Their prior system had distinct “Taxable Sales” and “Non-Taxable Sales” columns so multiplying taxable sales by the state rate matched “Tax Collected.” Shopify’s combined sales reporting makes this breakdown difficult.
Update/answer: A respondent says Shopify doesn’t offer a straightforward built-in way to produce separate taxable and non-taxable sales columns. They recommend the third-party Report Toaster app (link provided), which includes tax reports with both columns and offers support.
Outcome/status: No native Shopify solution or settings change was identified. The only concrete action suggested is to use the Report Toaster app. No alternative approaches or disagreements were presented, and the thread remains open pending the merchant’s decision.
There is not a straightforward way to do this in Shopify.
Our Report Toaster app can help. We have tax reports which include both your taxable and non-taxable sales in separate columns. Please feel free to reach out to support for any help you might need.
