Sell single units from case SKUs

Topic summary

A merchant needs to sell individual units on Shopify while their stock management system (NAV) tracks inventory in full cases. For example, one case of 6 bottles should appear as 6 separate sellable units on the storefront without creating individual SKUs in the backend system.

Proposed Solutions:

  • Shopify lacks native inventory pooling or case-breaking functionality
  • Suggested workarounds include inventory syncing apps or custom automation tools like Mechanic
  • Theme customization could adjust product display and inventory calculations (e.g., QTY 1 = 1 case of 6)

Resolution:
The original poster resolved this by modifying their stock management system (NAV) rather than Shopify. NAV now automatically converts case quantities into individual units when feeding data to the Shopify store, eliminating the need for Shopify-side customization.

my shopify store integrates with our stock management software to track live stock levels. Our stock is sold as individual units on our store, however we need to have stock showing as full cases on our stock management system.

Is there a way I can sell individual products from a case SKU? Kind of the opposite of bundling. So on our system we have a case of 6 bottles. I want those to show as 6 individual items on shopify, without setting up a new individual SKU in our stock system.

Hi @SarahLeigh :waving_hand: Shopify has no concept of inventory pooling, pulled from the case, etc etc.

Effectively not as the same sku, even if you heavy customizations or order editing hijinks you’d still end up with separate items in order to NOT show the full-case pricing etc to customers.

See pretty much any inventory syncin’g app, or for custom scenarios script custom automation using mechanic https://tasks.mechanic.dev/?q=sync

Hi @SarahLeigh ,

This would require theme customization on the product pages, collections and search. Also think about adjusting inventory since QTY 1 will actually be a case of 6 in your example.

Hi @SarahLeigh just wondering if you did get a solution to this in the end? We have the same issue.

Not on the shopify end, we had some work done on the stock management system side of things (we use NAV) so it feeds the shopify store with individual units based on number of cases and case size.
