Shipping Charges for the Highlands and Islands in Scotland

Topic summary

UK merchants are requesting the ability to set separate shipping rates for Scotland’s Highlands and Islands, where delivery costs are significantly higher than mainland Scotland. Currently, Shopify’s platform allows zone separation for territories like Isle of Man and Guernsey, but not for specific Scottish regions or UK islands like Isle of Wight.

Key Issues:

  • Merchants report losing money on orders to these areas (one user cited shipping costs 10x higher than expected)
  • The only workaround suggested by Shopify support is increasing rates for all of Scotland, which would overcharge customers in major cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh
  • Example cost disparity: £6.75 to Glasgow vs £23.75 to Highlands for identical parcels

Current Status:

  • Shopify acknowledged the issue over a year ago and passed feedback to their development team
  • No timeline or concrete solution has been provided
  • Merchants express frustration that third-party apps (which charge monthly fees) are the only current solution for what they consider basic e-commerce functionality

Merchant Request:
Ability to exclude specific postcodes or create granular shipping zones for UK regions—functionality they note exists on competing platforms and older bespoke websites.

Any luck with this? I see this back from january this year and I still can’t find a solution.

Hello Shopify Staff - please can you get this fixed ASAP. It cant be difficult to set up a separate shipping area called Highlands and Islands.

Hi,

No, I don’t believe there is a solution - very disappointing, as it can’t be that hard to implement as it has already been done for other countries.

Me too. Surely easy to add some shipping zones? I’m having to use DHL via Ship Theory and they both tell me that Shopify is responsible for the shipping zones which vary hugely!

@Shopify_77 we really need this vital functionality. You don’t allow access to edit the cart so it’s a disservice that you don’t supply a solution to this.

We sell rugs, and the larger and heavier ones can be up to £50 more to send than ‘mainland’ UK.

It’s horrible on a human level, a business level and a customer service/reputational level to have to contact customers after they purchase to say we have to take money for delivery or cancel your order.

Please fix this!

I would like to add my request for this feature too. The fact other countries including those in the UK can be set as different zones already, I can’t believe this fix still hasn’t been sorted.

+1 For me. The shipping costs and times to Scottish Highlands are a problem.

With products that have fine margins, taking a hit on £4 extra shipping charge or charging all of Scotland an extra £4 for each delivery is quite crippling.

we really need this as an option! any updates? Our shipping bill was 10x what is should be as lots of our customers come from the highlands and we had no way to change this. Any advice would be great

In the end we installed this app https://apps.shopify.com/shipping-based-on-zipcode?st_source=autocomplete it’s only $9.99 pm and works very well for UK postcodes. The support team are excellent and helped us get everything set up for no extra cost, so I would highly recommend them. Its not great that Shopify doesn’t have at least a basic version of postcode shipping but hopefully it will in the future.

I would also like to see an option for Highlands and Islands as it is costing a fortune in extra postage.

100% agree - we need to be able to seperate shipping costs for Highlands and all UK islands, not just the ones with different tax regimes.

I’m guessing there’s still no fix for this, right? Postcode delivery zones come as standard on WordPress with Woo Commerce, you know.

Come on Shopify its now 2024, over a year since this was asked to be added? Its not as if anyone is asking anything difficult just add another region for Scottish Highlands? Most other platforms already have this option. Should not take 12mths for a simple request to be sorted!

I had this same conversation with shopify support yesterday. As my shop is growing I’ve noticed I’ve been losing money on sales to the highlands and Scottish isles. Their only advice was to increase the shipping cost to the whole of Scotland which is going to make shipping so much higher to two big cities in the uk and put off customers. I can’t believe this was brought to their attention a year ago and they still haven’t fixed this issue. I gave them the postcodes that are more costly to ship to, how is it not a simple fix for them? It’s a huge issue and the face they are not taking so many uk seller seriously is a huge red flag for shopify for me.

Thats a stupid and weak response from Shopify! Christ I send coils of hose to Glasgow and Edinburgh several times a week and other locations across Scotland for £6.75, Highlands cost me £23.75 for same parcel! Seriously telling me the best solution they can come up with in twelve months is charge customers 4 times as much!

Wake up Shopify its 2024! if you need some direct maybe look at your competitors as they seem to have got to grips with UK localized shipping solutions!

The annoying thing is this function already exists for addresses in the US
and Canada, so it’s not even as if Shopify have to create anything new to
fix this issue.

I guess their US customer base is so much bigger it’s more of a priority for them to have it in place. I don’t know what more we can do for them to see how big an issue this is for a lot of people and actually fix it!

I know, it’s ridiculous. And I begrudge having to pay extra for an app every month for something that isn’t a nice extra to add to my store, but should be a basic function already provided!

Shopify is clearly not looking after this thread either anymore considering there are no more comments from this Victor from the start of the thread. I’ll be contacting Shopify myself about this matter and also linking back to this thread. It might be worth it if you all contact Shopify about this same issue we are having to try and get their attention as this would benefit so many users.

In the end we had to opt for the same solution recommended by DizzyLizzy (ShipZip - thanks to DizzyLizzy for this). It has opened our eyes to how much more functionality that’s Standard on other platforms is missing from Shopify: order cut offs, order throttling and limiting, holiday/closure blocking, delivery date scheduling/picker. All of these have been left for the aftermarket to address, so come at a $14.99 premium per month, leaving us depending on the app provider to keep supporting it after we’ve invested in setup. We’ve also found that the taxes and duties settings on Shopify are not working adequately for the UK shipping zone - not at all ideal and not an area anyone can afford to fall short on. Anyone else found this?
