Shipping charges per weight

Topic summary

A user is implementing weight-based shipping on Shopify, charging a fixed rate per kilogram (e.g., $10/kg or AED 1.60/kg) and seeks feedback on accuracy and customer satisfaction.

Community feedback highlights:

  • Weight-based shipping works well when product weights are accurate and carrier rates are reliable
  • Discrepancies can occur due to packaging weight or carrier rate fluctuations
  • Customers prefer transparent costs but may abandon purchases if they feel overcharged
  • Recommended practices include testing rates, offering free shipping thresholds, or flat-rate options

Effectiveness depends on product weight:

  • For lighter shipments: Generally reliable, as carrier rates typically range $7-12/kg
  • For heavier shipments: May result in overcharging customers compared to actual carrier costs

Current issue (unresolved):
The user’s shipping rule configuration is being interpreted incorrectly by Shopify. Instead of charging AED 1.60 per kilogram, the system applies AED 1.60 as a single flat rate for any order between 1-200 kg. A screenshot of the rule configuration was shared, but no solution has been provided yet.

Shopify’s weight-based shipping works well if your product weights are accurately set and your shipping carrier calculates costs reliably. However, some users find discrepancies due to packaging weight or carrier rate fluctuations. Customers generally prefer transparent shipping costs, but if they feel overcharged, it could impact conversions. A good practice is to test rates with different orders and consider offering free shipping thresholds or flat-rate options for a smoother experience.

Hey @TareqDabaan ,

I see what you’re going for with the weight-based shipping setup ($10 per kg). It can work well in certain cases, but it really depends on what you’re shipping.

If your orders usually have smaller total weights, this method can be pretty reliable since carrier rates tend to be in a similar range. For example, FedEx rates can vary between $7 to $12 per kg (after standard discounts), so you’d likely end up with a decent balance.

But if you’re dealing with heavier shipments, this approach might not be ideal. You could end up charging way more than what the carrier actually costs, which might put off potential customers and impact your sales.

So, it really depends on your product weight range and customer expectations.

Hope that helps! Would love to hear what kind of products you’re shipping.

I created this rule, but when i am testing it Shopify is interpreting it as one fixed rate of AED 1.60 for any order with a weight between 1 kg and 200 kg. This is not my requirement, i want the cost to be 1.60 AED per KG
