Shopify Direct Traffic Spike Everyday

Dear Shopify Help Community,

I am now facing a very strange problem, since late September, our “direct” traffic is soaring every day, originally less than 10 users a day, now can be more than 1200 a day, when I check the report, found that the direct traffic dwell time is 0, and even visit the 404 page, why would this phenomenon?

Is this Shopify Bot?

Hi @Olafus ,

That’s an interesting issue and does indeed suggest non-genuine traffic (likely a bot).

While there is nothing that you can do to stop people (or bots) from visiting your store, you could certainly safeguard against possible fraudulent orders by using an app to block those orders from being placed in the first place.

Shopify has a free app called Fraud Filter that enables you to create filters so that if an order is placed on your store that meets the criteria you have created for a fraudulent order, it will cancel that order immediately. I hope this helps!

In the meantime, how is business going otherwise? I had a look at your store and you’ve done a great job. Your mission statement is admirable, and the analogy with Olaf the snowman is endearing.

Your brand is a tongue-in-cheek reference to a children’s cartoon character, so it would definitely make sense for the tone of your website to reflect the playful, childlike, cartoonish inspiration for your brand. At the moment, the humor of the snowman is not consistent with the mood and customer experience of your website. For inspiration, check out this blog post and this one.

I’d recommend hiring or consulting a copywriter for your content. The reason I do is that they will be able to accurately convey the mood you’re trying to achieve by weaving comedy throughout your text and clearing up any grammar or sentences that perhaps don’t make much sense:

I’d also like to point out that minor mistakes can detract from how trustworthy your site seems, so please try to avoid them:

In fact, here is a great community post about Buyer Trust 101 that I highly recommend using to cross-check your site and make sure that you’re not losing potential customers because of errors that do not reflect the caliber of your product and your service.

If you’re unsure of where to find a decent content or copy expert, try our directory of Shopify Experts. All Expert contracts, requirements, and prices are agreed upon before any work commences, so you can always check in with a few different Experts to ensure you’re getting what you want for a competitive price.

I hope this too helps!
