Shopify Email with Custom Liquid Background Image - Is it possible?

If you edit a Shopify email, then add a Custom Liquid section, then add a simple div with a background image, does it work?

I cannot get it to appear in the preview or test email. Does Shopify Email strip HTML/CSS background images?

Is there a trick to using a CSS background image in a Shopify Email? The CSS seems to get stripped out when I send a preview.
