I set up my store using Dawn version 2.3.0 and have since edited the code files to get my store looking exactly as I like it. I also use certain apps like judge.me which have edited code.
If I upgrade to 3.0 (I don’t know how to do this yet, I should also figure that out) do I also then have to go and change everything I did before, like adding custom fonts, changing styles and sizes etc. around the site?
If you’ve made changes to your current theme, and decide to update Dawn to a newer version, you’ll need to go thru all the files you’ve changed, manually, and port all your edits to Dawn 3.0.
Oh wow, this all sounds so long-winded and convoluted. I would have thought there would have been a much simpler way to do this and I wish I kept a better log of all the changes I had made to the theme now.
I had kinda made changes as I went and cannot remember everywhere that I made changes.
I guess I’ll stick on 2.3.0 until I’m forced off it as I cannot remember every change I made throughout this theme. There have been a lot of them!
Sadly, the changes made in the Theme Editor didn’t copy over and I was told by Shopify support that I need to essentially rebuild my site every time there’s an update to the theme. There have been three updates in the six weeks since I have been live! So essentially I need to rebuild my site every two weeks.
Sustainable while small, but long term this is going to be a dreadful headache to the point we’re already looking at other providers as Shopify is meant to be the easy solution to our problems. The funny thing is, their mission statement is:
Make commerce better for everyone, so businesses can focus on what they do best: building and selling their products.
Except I have to focus on rebuilding my site now for the next day or so rather than making new products to sell.
When I asked Shopify why my site hasn’t been copied over to the new version, their reply was that I had to rebuild the site each time I updated the theme version. I was flabbergasted, so asked them to check, and when checking with developers they confirmed that I must rebuild my site every time I want to update to the latest version.
Needless to say we’re looking into WordPress and Wix this morning.
Thank you for your help, though. It is appreciated.
