Should the PayPal business account name be the same as the business name of the shopify store?

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner is experiencing a PayPal checkout error (“Things don’t appear to be working at the moment”) when attempting to process payments.

Core Issue:

  • The Shopify store is registered under one company
  • The connected PayPal business account belongs to a different, unrelated company
  • Despite successfully adding the PayPal account to Shopify settings, test transactions are failing

Recommended Solutions:

  1. Verify business information consistency between both platforms (name, address)
  2. Check PayPal account for restrictions or pending verification requirements
  3. Consider creating a dedicated PayPal business account specifically for the Shopify store
  4. Remove and re-add PayPal integration in Shopify payment settings
  5. Contact PayPal support to investigate potential blocks due to business detail mismatches

Status: The issue remains unresolved. The mismatch between company entities is likely causing verification problems or triggering PayPal’s fraud detection systems.

I have an issue with the Shopify paypal checkout. It shows an error " Things don’t appear to be working at the moment".

We used two companies in two places. One is for our shopify store and the other is for our paypal business account. These two companies are not related. But we added the Paypal account successfully here in our store.

But we tested it and it turns out we have issues. Can someone let us know wether we should create a new paypal business account for the store?

Hi @rawrrmantis , I hope you are keeping well!

From your message, what I can understand is that you’re encountering an issue with PayPal on your Shopify checkout. It can possibly be due to a mismatch between your Shopify store and PayPal business account details. Since your Shopify store and PayPal business account belong to two different companies and are not related, this could be causing verification issues or payment processing errors. PayPal may be flagging the transactions due to inconsistencies in business details.

Here are some simple steps to fix the PayPal issue on your Shopify store:

  1. Check Your Business Info – Make sure the details on your Shopify store (like name and address) match what’s on your PayPal business account. Even if they’re separate companies, PayPal might need them to be consistent.
  2. Look for Account Issues – Log into your PayPal Business account to see if there are any restrictions or verification steps you need to complete.
  3. Try a Different PayPal Account – If the issue continues, consider creating a new PayPal Business account just for your Shopify store. This can help prevent any mismatched details.
  4. Re-add PayPal to Shopify – Remove PayPal from your Shopify payment settings and add it again. Make sure all details and API settings are correct.
  5. Contact PayPal Support – If none of the above work, reach out to PayPal for help. They can check if payments are being blocked due to any mismatched business details.
