I want the user to be able to click an image in the carousel and have the variant option associated with that image be selected.
when you click on another image the variant stays the same
I want it to switch to the correct variant.

How would you do this in the dawn theme? There is no theme.js or theme.js.liquid files.
This code is not compatible with Dawm theme that’s why I said take idea from it.
About theme.js file, it’s possible that the theme uses a different structure or naming convention for its JavaScript files.
