The app does not translate the URL identificator

Topic summary

Issue Identified:
Shopify’s Translate & Adapt app does not automatically translate URL identifiers/handles. URLs must be manually translated rather than auto-translating like other content.

Current Capabilities:

  • Manual URL translation is supported for different languages
  • Bulk translation tools are available for efficiency
  • URLs cannot be adapted by market (only by language)

Recent Updates:

  • Global search feature now allows searching across all translatable resources and languages
  • Enhanced filtering options added to the editor

Unresolved Question:
Whether changing product URL handles for different markets (e.g., “single” to “twin” for US vs UK markets) is possible or advisable from an SEO perspective. Staff confirmed market-specific URL adaptation is not supported and noted it’s uncommon practice to vary URLs across markets.

Hello, the app does not translate de URL identificator, does that afect us?

Hi Alejandra.

So seems it’s currently not something that can be done, but Shopify appear to be looking into adding support for it. No time frame when, but here is a community post about it.

Michael Thomas

Hi @Alejandra_32 , URLs do not auto-translate, they can only be manually translated.

Hey @Michael-Thomas , you’ll see in that post an announcement that confirms it is possible to translate URLs. They do not, however, auto-translate. For advice on bulk translating URLs, check here.

Hi Rich. Oh that’s great news. I wasn’t aware that it can support this.

Great progress from the team. Any chance of an update when adding more than 2 languages supported for auto updating? I do love the app. Well done to the team on it.

If I was to provide feedback, I would love a search feature on the dashboard to look up translations, I know you can search inside say a specific area, but sometimes I find it hard to know where the area I should begin search is.

Hey @Michael-Thomas , you’re in luck there too! Global search launched recently (https://www.shopify.com/uk/editions/winter2024#translate-adapt-improved-search)) - have a look at the top bar of the editor and you’ll see a search icon; this enables you to search across all translatable resources in all available languages.

Wow, and I see we got filters and all. Incredible stuff. Great to see the app being expanded on.

Are there any plans to introduce URLs for Markets? I can change URLs for languages but not Markets.

You can change URLs for markets. In the domains and languages assignment, set it to using subfolders.

I have already activated subfolders. I meant product handles URLs. For example, I have a client that wants US terms to be used for sizes. Their primary market is UK. So we have used Translate and Adapt to amend all the titles, descriptions (from Single to Twin, eg) but the product handles contain -single and they want to know if that can be amended to -twin for the US Market.

Is that possible and also it is advisable to change product URLs for different Markets (not languages)? Or is it recommended to keep the URLs intact to retain SEO ranking?

I see, yes you’re correct it’s not possible to adapt the URL handle by market. I can’t give you direct SEO advice, but I can say that it’s not a common request - people tend to keep them consistent across markets.
