The new code editor!

Topic summary

Shopify has rolled out a new code editor, replacing the previous version with no option to revert. Users are divided on its usability.

Main complaint:

  • Beginners find the new editor significantly less intuitive than the old one, particularly for simple tasks like modifying shop cart code.
  • Navigation and locating necessary elements has become more difficult for non-developers.

Differing perspectives:

  • One user argues the new editor offers improvements in navigation precision and includes helpful features (with tutorial video provided).
  • Another user counters that for non-professional developers, the new editor is “far worse” except for its search functionality.

Suggested solution:

  • Keep the old editor as the default for general merchant use, while offering the new version as an “advanced editor” option.

Status: The discussion remains open with no resolution; the change is permanent per Shopify’s update.

I hate it so much, I am not a code editor etc. yet the older one seemed WAY more user friendly than this one for beginners, I just wanted to change my shop cart in code, and then saw the new one, literally have no idea where to look up the stuff that I need.

Is there any way I can change it to the old one?

No, you cannot go back because it’s a shopify update. It may seem intriguing but it actually is somewhat better from the old one.

Here’s a video that will get you started:

You will see that there are so e stuffs that actually make navigation more simpler and precise.

I disagree. Unless you are a professional dev, the new code editor is far worse. There is only one advantage for merchants for the new editor and that’s search.

For simple edits and adding code snippets, the old editor was far more user friendly for merchants.

IMHO, Shopify should have kept the old editor for general use and add this new editor on as an advanced editor.

Well I am certainly not a professional dev, I put myself somewhere between beginner and medium level where I know things just enough to make it work.

And yes as far as I have used vs code for development the new editor very represents this so may be it is easier for developers than for merchants.
