The store is acting strangely, what happened?

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner reported that their product page displays correctly in the theme editor but changes unexpectedly after saving. The issue was visible on their Custom Felt Sculptures product page.

Common causes identified by community members:

  • Market/template mismatch – Editing the wrong market or template version (most frequently suggested cause)
  • Theme version confusion – Editing a draft theme instead of the published one
  • App conflicts – Third-party apps injecting code that only appears on the live site
  • Caching issues – Browser or CDN cache showing outdated content
  • App embeds disabled – Theme editor showing features that aren’t enabled globally

Recommended troubleshooting steps:

  • Verify the correct market is selected in the product page template menu (left sidebar)
  • Confirm editing the published theme, not a draft
  • Test in incognito mode or add a cache-busting query parameter
  • Check that the correct template is assigned to the product
  • Review app embed settings and visibility rules

Resolution: The original poster confirmed the problem was solved, though they didn’t specify which solution worked.

Hi @xinx

I have checked your store out and seen that nothing is wrong!

Could you please provide images for me to easily investigate your problems?

Best,

Hi there,

That usually happens if there’s a conflict between what you see in the theme editor (preview) and the published theme. A few things you can check:

  • Theme code edits – Recent Liquid or custom code changes might be overriding how the page is displayed.

  • App interference – Some apps inject scripts or templates that only show on the live site, not in the editor.

  • Caching/CDN – Clear your browser cache or test in incognito to rule that out.

I’d recommend duplicating your theme, publish the duplicate, and see if the issue persists. If it works fine in the duplicate, it’s likely a code or app conflict in your current live theme.

May I know if you have refreshed the page to see the changes? Sometimes it is not updated if not loaded or refreshed properly.

You may have edited your page template in the incorrect market. Please check the market menu on the left side of your product page template menu.

Hey @xinx

This usually happens when what you’re editing isn’t the same thing that’s rendering live. A few quick checks fix 90% of these.

  1. Make sure you’re editing the live theme
Online Store → Themes. Check the “Published” badge. If you’re editing a Draft, your changes save there but won’t show live until you Publish. In the editor URL, look for theme_id. If it doesn’t match the published theme_id, you’re on a draft.

  2. Confirm the template you edited is the one that page uses
Common gotcha: you edited product.json, but the product is assigned to product.custom or a page is using page.contact instead of page.json.
Go to the actual product or page in the admin → Theme template dropdown → switch to the template you edited, or edit the one it’s actually using.

  3. Check per-template vs global sections
Some sections are added only to a single template instance. If you added a block on Home, it won’t appear on Collections or Product by default. Open the correct template in the theme editor and add it there too.

  4. Bust cache and test without extensions
Shopify’s CDN caches hard. Open the live page in a new incognito window, or add a dummy query like ?v=123 to the URL. Temporarily disable ad blockers or script managers that can hide sections.

  5. App blocks and “App embeds”
If you’re using a slide cart, upsell, badges, or page builders, those often show in preview but not live if the app embed isn’t enabled globally.
Theme editor → App embeds → toggle on. Also check the app’s visibility rules for templates and markets.

  6. Markets, translations, and customer segments
If you have Shopify Markets or a translation app, the live storefront may show different content based on country or language, even if the editor looks fine. Test with a VPN or switch market/language to match what you edited.

  7. Alternate views vs real page
Quick view, search results, and cart drawers use different templates or snippets. If your change looks fine on the product page but not in Quick view, edit the quick view snippet/template separately.

  8. Third-party scripts and speed apps
AB testing, theme optimizers, or Cloudflare can rewrite or defer sections. Temporarily pause them to see if the live view snaps back to what you saved.

If you share the theme name, whether it’s Published or Draft, the exact URL, and any apps touching that page, I’ll tell you exactly where the mismatch is and what to flip.

Hi @xinx

It’s possible that you edited your page template in the wrong market. Try checking the market menu on the left side of your product page template to make sure you’re in the right market.
