Thinking about switching to Shopify from Wordpress

Hi,

I am new to Shopify and thinking about switching from my current WooCommerce Wordpress platform. I have several questions and thought that I would be able to speak to someone at Shopify, but see that there are no options to…

  1. Can I keep my current domain name that I currently have with GoDaddy?

  2. Can I keep my current website email addresses that I currently have with GoDaddy?

  3. Does Shopify only allow product pages for selling or can I also have an “About” page, an “Events” page and a “Locations” page on the site?

  4. Can I show product videos along with my photos on the product pages?

  5. Is the basic plan enough for my jewelry business which has about 180 products?

  6. What is the main difference between the basic plan and the middle plan?

  7. Can I migrate my data over from my WordPress site?

  8. Will I be able to integrate my Facebook pixel and Pinterest pixel?

I would greatly appreciate getting some clarity on these questions.

Thank you so much,

Pamela

Hi Pamela,

I’m excited to help you explore Shopify and address your questions! Transitioning from WooCommerce WordPress to Shopify can bring new opportunities for your jewelry business. Let’s dive into your inquiries:

  1. Domain Name: Yes, you can definitely keep your current domain name from GoDaddy. Shopify allows you to connect your existing domain to your new Shopify store seamlessly.

  2. Email Addresses: You can continue using your current website email addresses from GoDaddy. Shopify doesn’t directly provide email hosting, but you can still manage your email accounts through GoDaddy or another email service provider.

  3. Website Pages: Shopify supports more than just product pages. You can create additional pages like an “About” page, “Events” page, and “Locations” page. It offers flexibility in designing your site’s structure and content.

  4. Product Videos: Yes, you can showcase both product photos and videos on your product pages. This can provide customers with a richer and more immersive shopping experience.

  5. Basic Plan: The Basic Shopify plan might suit your jewelry business with 180 products. It offers the essentials for setting up and managing an online store. However, it’s a good idea to review the features of the plan to ensure it meets all your needs.

  6. Plan Differences: The main difference between the Basic plan and the middle-tier plan (often called the Shopify plan or something similar) lies in the features offered. The higher-tier plan might include more advanced reporting, gift card creation, and better shipping discounts. Reviewing the feature list will help you decide which plan aligns with your requirements.

  7. Data Migration: Yes, you can migrate your data from your WordPress site to Shopify. There are apps and services available that can assist with the migration process, ensuring a smooth transition of products, customers, and content.

  8. Pixel Integration: You can certainly integrate your Facebook pixel and Pinterest pixel with your Shopify store. This allows you to track customer behavior and run effective advertising campaigns.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or need further clarification. Shopify offers resources and support to help you make the switch and optimize your online store. Best of luck with your jewelry business’s new journey!

Warm regards,

Hi and thank you so much for your prompt and thorough responses!
I think you have me sold! I have had so many problems with WordPress and I am fed up… My website is down as of an issue today and I am very stressed about it…

Regarding the domain, I just wanted to clarify: When you said that I can keep my current domain from GoDaddy, did you mean keep it with GoDaddy or did you mean I can switch it over so that Shopify now owns it?

That is fantastic that I can migrate my data over from WordPress! I’m sure that I will have to do a bunch of editing, but if the data is all moved over, that is great.

What I am wondering is if there is more customer support for me once I officially sign up. It has been hard to get help so far with Shopify on the platform and I may need some help in the migration. Will I have phone support once I sign up?

It seems like the basic plan will be perfect. I’m going to start looking at themes. Do most businesses purchase a theme or use one of your free themes? I am assuming that I will purchase one. Do you have any recommendations for successful jewelry themes for Sterling Silver and 18K Gold Vermeil jewelry? (Just curious…)

If I would be interested in the yearly plan, how do you suggest I start? Should I sign up for the 3-day free trial and after the 3 days I would see the option for the yearly plan?

Thank you so much!
Pamela

Hello @Bluemoon22222 [email removed] Pamela

I’m glad I could assist you! It’s completely understandable that you’re looking for a smoother experience than what you’ve had with WordPress. Let’s address your follow-up questions:

Domain Clarification: My apologies for any confusion. You can keep your current domain registered with GoDaddy and simply connect it to your new Shopify store. Shopify won’t take ownership of your domain; they’ll just provide you with the steps to link it effectively.

Data Migration: That’s right, while some editing might be necessary, migrating your data from WordPress to Shopify should significantly simplify the transition process.

Customer Support: Shopify does offer customer support to its users, and it can vary based on the plan you choose. Higher-tier plans generally provide more advanced support options, including phone support. For phone support, you might consider looking into the specific plan details when signing up to ensure you’ll have access to the level of assistance you need during migration and beyond.

Choosing Themes: Many businesses opt for paid themes because they often come with more customization options and unique features. However, Shopify’s free themes are also quite capable and can be a great starting point, especially for smaller businesses. For jewelry, a theme that highlights product images, provides a clean and elegant design, and offers easy navigation would likely be a good fit.

Yearly Plan: Signing up for the 3-day free trial is a good way to get a feel for Shopify’s platform and features. If you decide that Shopify is the right fit for your business, you can indeed switch to a yearly plan after the trial period ends. Keep an eye out for the option to upgrade when your trial is complete.

As for themes catering to Sterling Silver and 18K Gold Vermeil jewelry, you might want to explore themes that allow for high-quality product imagery, detailed product descriptions, and perhaps even interactive product showcases.

Best of luck with your transition to Shopify, Pamela! The platform offers a wide range of tools and resources to support your online store’s success. If you encounter any more questions along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Warm regards,

I have another question: After I sign up for the 3 day trial and then pay for the yearly plan, can I take the time to build my new site while my old site is still up and running? Am I able to migrate the data to the Shopify theme while my old site is still running and then make all of my edits until I have perfected it? I’m hoping that I can do that and then seamlessly transfer the domain over to the new site after it is done without any downtime on my website.

Thank you!
Pamela

@Bluemoon22222

Certainly, Pamela! You’re in luck, as Shopify provides a smooth transition process for scenarios just like yours. After signing up for the 3-day trial and subsequently upgrading to the yearly plan, you can definitely take your time to build and perfect your new site while your old site continues to remain active and accessible.

Shopify offers a convenient feature called “development stores” or “sandbox stores.” This enables you to work on your new site behind the scenes without affecting your live site’s functionality. You can migrate your data, customize your Shopify theme, and make all the necessary edits to achieve the desired look and functionality.

Once you’re satisfied with your new site’s design and content, and you’re ready to launch it, you can seamlessly transfer the domain from your old site to the new one. Shopify provides detailed instructions and tools to help you do this without causing any downtime to your website. This means that visitors won’t experience any interruption while you make the switch.

In essence, Shopify’s platform is designed to ensure a smooth transition between your old and new sites. By utilizing development stores and following their domain transfer process, you can confidently create and perfect your new site before making it live, all while keeping your old site running without any disruptions.

If you have any further questions or need assistance throughout this process, Shopify’s customer support is available to help guide you along the way.

Best of luck with building and launching your new site!

if you want to build your store from very scratch you can have our services.

Hi,

I started my free trial and I am ready to migrate my data over from my WordPress/WooCommerce site. How do I do this? Do I migrate the data over before I expire themes? I’m hoping that I can try out the themes with my data there so I can really see what it would look like. I would like to get started today.
Thank you!
