I used to have a Wix website but decided to switch to Shopify because I liked it more. When I set up my Shopify store I purchased a new domain however I’d like to use my old Wix domain to redirect to my new Shopify site. Is this possible? I’ve already deactivated my old Wix website but the domain is link to my Wix account still so I didn’t know if I could still use to redirect or not.
Hey @TEN23 ,
If your domain is still with Wix, then you’d need to login to your Wix account and transfer the domain to a different hosting provider.
See here: https://support.wix.com/en/article/transferring-your-wix-domain-away-from-wix-2477749
Completing the steps above will allow the domain to leave Wix, but then you’ll also need to initiate the transfer to the hosting provider you’re switching to, on their end as well. I’d recommend transferring the domain to GoDaddy, as that’ll be the best option, in case you ever decide to leave Shopify (I have all of my domains with GoDaddy).
So once you’ve completed the steps from the help doc above (on Wix), then you’ll want to follow the steps in this next help doc on GoDaddy’s end.
https://ca.godaddy.com/help/transfer-my-domain-to-godaddy-1592
Alternatively, if you want to transfer the domain directly to Shopify, then you would follow this help doc instead (after following the help doc above from Wix’s end):
https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/domains/add-a-domain/connecting-domains/transferring-domains
If you do end up transferring to GoDaddy, then once your domain name is with them, you’d just have to setup the DNS settings to point to the new Shopify store. Follow the steps listed here:
https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/domains/add-a-domain/connecting-domains/connect-domain-automatic
If you’d prefer to have someone handle all of this for you, then you can hire an Expert/Partner from this page (https://www.shopify.com/partners/directory/services/development-and-troubleshooting/domain-setup).
If you’d like to work with me directly, you can reach me via email at: support@stephensworld.ca
Hope the above helps point you in the right direction!
Cheers,
Stephen
Hi @StephensWorld im in the same situation as @TEN23 . Is it possible just to change the A record and C Name from the DNS settings on the wix page to Shopifys A record and shops.myshopify.com for the C Name. I am wondering if it is necessary to transfer the domain away from Wix to GoDaddy, and if so what the benefit of that is. TIA
Hi, @magneticprints !
I came across this thread and wanted to share some support.
If you purchased your domain from a domain provider other than Google Domains, GoDaddy, or 1&1 IONOS, and you have their requirements, then you can connect your domain to Shopify manually. However, you will want to ensure that you still have access to make any DNS settings as they may be needed in the future, which you may not have access to if the account is closed.
You can look into transferring your domain over to Shopify as you no longer need to use the third-party domain service where you originally bought the domain. You can learn more about the process here.
It should be possible to edit the DNS records from within Wix:
https://support.wix.com/en/article/managing-dns-records-in-your-wix-account
However, if you’re no longer using Wix, then it makes sense to move it over to Shopify (or else GoDaddy). If you move it over to Shopify, then you can manage everything all in one place. If you move it over to GoDaddy, then you won’t ever have to move it again, if you ever switch ecommerce platforms again.
Thanks @Mac_2 and @StephensWorld , that is really helpful! I just bought 2 years for my domain with Wix recently and then changed to shopify. I’ve been able to change the DNS settings so that it works. Apparently I’m unable to change to Shopify because it is a .au domain. Just wondering if I change the domain to GoDaddy if it will cause disruptions to my website, and if so for how long.
GoDaddy states that “most domain transfers complete in 5-7 days.” However, that doesn’t mean that your domain would be down for that long – that’s just how long the transfer process takes. There might not be any downtime at all. You’d probably want to check with GoDaddy’s support team though, for a better answer.
Great, thank you so much @StephensWorld
