Transferring Domain registration for just-bought Store

Hi Guys, I just bought a shopify business and the domain is registered with domain.com.

The seller of the business wants me to transfer the domain registration to my account on either Domains.comor other provider.

I got a EPP Authorisation code from the seller and initiated the transfer with my preferred provider.

Then I contacted my provider and they said they don’t support Shopify. BUT then said it doesn’t matter as the files won’t move, just the domain Registration.

Should I be concerned?

The Shopify Support site is full of stuff about transfers:

https://help.shopify.com/en/search?#/?q=domain

All very confusing for a Newbie like me…

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Great question!

If you’re using the same domain provider, then I suspect you won’t see any downtime as Domain.com would only need to update the registrar information. Once done, you can point the domain to Shopify by updating the “A” record to 23.227.38.65 and the “cname” record to shops.myshopify.com. Once the records are updated, it will take 24-48 hours to take effect before you can add the domain to your Shopify store (assuming the DNS records are returned to default when you transfer ownership).

If you transfer the domain to a different domain provider, then it could take between 10-20 business days for the transfer to finalize. From there, you’d then need to update the DNS records and wait another 24-48 hours. The document you linked would be if you transferred the domain to Shopify which is where Shopify would take responsibility for the billing and troubleshooting of your domain.

I’d be curious to know why your domain provider says they don’t support Shopify. Getting more information on why they can’t support Shopify will help you determine if you should use them as a domain provider.

Does that help clear up your confusion?

Thanks Peter.

It seems that I will have to wait in order to see if the transfer that has been already initiated with my usual domain provider will cause issues.

If so, I may need to setup an account on domain.com and transfer it back.

Just as long as the store stays online…!

I think you should be okay. Most domain providers will allow you to point your domain to another service. Hopefully, that is the case for the domain provider you’ve selected.

Thanks Peter.

I ended up cancelling the Transfer with my provider and made an account with the same one as current registrar.

Cheers.
