Just a couple of days ago, the bulk editor worked as always. Apparently there is a new version that just come into play for me today. Here’s the situation. I need to change tags in several products. I highlight all the products I want to edit, I click the Edit products button and the items appear. I sell T-shirts, so every product that is listed has lines under it representing four or five different sizes. You can’t modify tags on Variants so they are really in the way. Used to, I could click on Columns and turn off the variant columns. This will leave a clear list of all the items I need to change. Usually about 20-30 items per page. I could then highlight (click the dot in the corner of the first item) and drag down to all the items I wish to modify. That was great!
Now we have a problem. There’s no way to make the variants disappear. If I click on the Columns button, there is no way to turn these off. As a result, I can only highlight and change about five items at a time. This is DRASTICALLY increasing my work time. (see screenshot)
I see that they’ve been talking about a new bulk editor for the past year or so, but this only changed for me in the last two days. Two days ago, I did some major bulk editing by turning the variants off and giving them out of the way.
Did I do something to activate this? What can we do to fix this. Only changing 5 items at a time when I used to change 20 is killing me here. Please help!

I don’t like it either. I am still waiting for Google Metafield in Bulk Editor.
Hi @JerryFarris and @AlohaAkahai ,
You may want to try editing the metafields in bulk using our awesome app. Actually, there are multiple ways to do that:
- Excel-like editor ;
- Bulk editor;
- CSV import ;
Depending on your goal, you can either edit metafields using the spreadsheet-like UI of the Excel-like editor (just like the Shopify’s “bulk editor”), create “global” metafields (metafields that have the same value for all the products) in a single click with the bulk editor or import the data from your from a CSV file.
No. I refuse to pay for something that Shopify should have put in Bulk Editor to begin with.

I created simple nodejs app that bulk updates prices in a CSV sheet. I’ve been waiting to do Google Bulk Updater but im been lazy to Map Shopify Taxonomy to Googles.
Hi There
Have you found any solution?
Shopify Team: I understand you want to test new features, and one way is trial and error, but this issue is gonna negatively impact many accounts. Please offer a solution
Tags do not apply to Variants, only the Root product.
Also, by the way, you can Select the first item then Shift Click the last item in the list. It will select all the products. Then scroll back up to the top of the list and edit the first one. The Edit will apply to all selected items. If you shift-click scroll bar, it will go to the bottom faster too.

HI AlohaAkahai
I did not know that clicking only on the first one, you could apply the change to all the others.
Thanks for the info.
I did not know this either. I just tried it, and it’s fantastic! Thank you so much for the suggestion!
However, you can add/remove tags from admin product list easily.
You click on first one then goto bottom and shift click on last one. It selects entire section. It’s like excel.

I agree with you, this should be reviewed, because although we can edit the entire list of products, we are wasting valuable space with empty rows of products.
How easy it would be to have an option to customise the Bulk Editor view to disable variants…
We need a solution.
Two years have passed and we still have the variants in the bulk editor, getting in the way and serving no purpose.

I didn’t find a complete solution but did find something that speeds up the process significantly. If you start at the bottom and click the arrows to collapse variants you can click quickly and it auto goes to the next one above. If/when it forces you to scroll, a quick roller ball action up will automatically put you on the next arrow (without having to scroll in entirety.) It’s difficult to explain but can record a video if needed.
But I dont disagree— SHOPIFY get on this basic task for the love of our sanity.
It doesn’t bother me. If you click on first one, shift click at the bottom of the scroll bar (shift instantly takes you to bottom), then shift click on last item in the column. Then shift-click back to top. You can bulk edit the entire column of data. You just have to get good at narrowing down the list prior to clicking bulk edit.
If Devs would make Shift Click to collapse all the products.

It bothers a lot, for example, when checking a large list of products, if a field changes or not between them… the list with variants is tremendously long, imagine that in your store you have 8 sizes per product, it is insufferable.
What is the problem with being able to select whether or not you want the variants to appear in the list? Is it so difficult to do this? We would be able to make a compact list and save a lot of time.
